Alistair Cook odds on not to captain next England Test after India humbling

The markets suggest his time in charge of the Three Lions might be over

Paddy Power make Alistair Cook odds on not to captain England’s next Test after his side’s disastrous series in India.

Yesterday’s defeat – surrendered with a meek batting performance after conceding a record total the day before – summed up a poor year under Cook’s leadership.

England’s limp display in the 4-0 series defeat has prompted calls for Cook’s resignation, lead by legendary figure Geoffrey Boycott.

We make it 4/7 that he won’t lead the team in their next Test – with Joe Root the favourite to succeed him (8/11).

Asked about the captaincy situation spokesperson Paddy Power said: “Cook has looked stumped at what he can do to change his side’s fortunes.

“Sadly, it seems he may be the root of the problem – and Root may well be the answer.”

To captain England in next Test

Root – 8/11
Cook – 5/4
Broad – 33/1
Bairstow – 50/1
Anderson – 66/1
Stokes – 66/1
Kevin Pietersen – 200/1
