Men’s Australian Open 2025

Name the Finalists – Jannik Sinner v Novak Djokovic

Reigning champion Jannik Sinner has the luxury of occupying the opposite half of the draw to the three players the oddsmakers believe are his closest challengers.

Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and Alexander Zverev are among those battling it out in the bottom section, while the world number one is rightly odds-on to emerge from the top half and reach his third consecutive hardcourt Grand Slam final.

The Italian’s doping case remains unresolved, and he has admitted that it is “in (his) head a little bit”. Still, there is little reason to believe this will derail him Down Under. Sinner’s dominant US Open triumph in 2024 came within weeks of the positive test results being made public, and he looked utterly unfazed.

His odds to win the tournament outright are too skinny to get involved with, but the Name the Finalists market offers an enticing angle. Alcaraz is the favourite to join Sinner at Rod Laver Arena, but Melbourne specialist Djokovic may have been underestimated.

Alcaraz recovered from a poor showing at the US Open to win in Beijing in October. However, his season petered out after that, with early exits at the Paris Masters and ATP Finals. The 21-year-old has not played competitively since but did lose to Alex De Minaur in an exhibition on Wednesday.

For a man yet to even reach a semi-final at the Australian Open in his career, he is priced relatively short to go one better than that. He has the highest ceiling of anybody on the tour, but his inconsistency makes him opposable in this spot.

Meanwhile, Djokovic lost to Reilly Opelka in Brisbane last week, and they could clash again in the third round next week. As a consequence of that, his odds have now been pushed into backable territory.

His defeat by Sinner a year ago ended a 33-match unbeaten run at the first Grand Slam of the year, and it will be very tough for anyone else to oust him.

Djokovic, who showed he can still operate at the highest level by completing the Golden Slam at the 2024 Olympics, can have one more deep run at the venue, bringing him more joy than anywhere else.

Tommy Paul to Reach the Semi-Finals (Quarter 4)

Zverev leads the way in the Quarter 4 betting. Given how much he has underachieved at majors, he would be a good candidate to take on in any circumstances. But his elbow problem and now a bicep strain make it a perfect betting opportunity.

It then becomes a question of who you side with. While Ugo Humbert has shown improvement, and some might be drawn to backing home country hero Nick Kyrgios, Tommy Paul stands out as the player with the strongest credentials to advance from this section.

The American’s victory in Stockholm in October and encouraging performances at the start of this month have elevated him to the cusp of the world’s top 10 for the first time. This is ideal preparation for a Grand Slam that yielded his only major semi-final to date in 2023.

At the odds quoted, the upwards-trending Paul looks a great shout to repeat the success of two years ago.

Women’s Australian Open 2025

Elena Rybakina to win (each-way)

Aryna Sabalenka aims for a third straight Melbourne title this year and arrives in ominous form, having already notched the Brisbane International title in 2025.

There are several tricky assignments if she is to complete the hat-trick, including teenager Mirra Andreeva, who could face the defending champion in the fourth round. It would be their second Grand Slam meeting after the Russian pulled off the upset at the French Open last year.

The talented Zheng Qinwen, who Sabalenka beat in the 2024 Australian Open final, is also in Quarter 1 and will be dangerous.

It is the 2023 runner-up, though, who appeals the most as an outright selection, as Elena Rybakina, now under the guidance of Djokovic’s former coach Goran Ivanisevic, looks to make amends for a disappointing 2024 campaign.

The 2022 Wimbledon champion should have doubled her All England Club tally last summer but buckled under the pressure of being the favourite as the other contenders fell. Now seemingly injury-free and with fresh input in her team, she can make the most of a relatively kind section of the women’s draw.
