Men’s US Open 2024

There is little to separate the top three ranked players in the betting odds for the men’s singles at the US Open. Carlos Alcaraz was the pre-draw favourite, but having been placed in the same half as Jannik Sinner, his task has become more complex, while 2023 champion Novak Djokovic has avoided the pair and seen his price shorten.

Novak Djokovic to win

Despite not playing a competitive hardcourt match since March, Djokovic gets the nod to defend the US Open title for the first time in his career.

The Serb has only participated in two events since injuring his knee at the French Open. One of these was Wimbledon, where he wasn’t physically at his best, leading to his defeat by Alcaraz in the final. However, his subsequent victory at the Olympics, where he won the gold medal without dropping a set, might be the most remarkable achievement in an extraordinary career that shows no signs of slowing down.‌

Djokovic is running out of records to chase, but while his triumph in Paris will be his standout memory of 2024, he remains motivated to succeed at the US Open. A win at Queens would see him equal Roger Federer and Pete Sampras’ Open Era record of five US Open titles.

Alexei Popyrin could be a tricky third-round opponent, followed by a potential fourth-round match against either Ben Shelton or Frances Tiafoe. But the key advantage is that he wouldn’t face Alcaraz or Sinner until the final. These two are the only men who have defeated him at Grand Slams since his loss to Rafael Nadal at the 2022 French Open.‌

The lack of hardcourt preparation doesn’t help, but Alcaraz lost in his first match at the Cincinnati Open, and Sinner’s hip continues to be an issue on top of his doping case.

Alexander Zverev To Reach The Semi-Finals

Sitting in third place in the Race to Turin rankings, Alexander Zverev has been one of the most consistent players on tour this year. He looks to have a manageable route to the semi-finals in New York.‌

He should have made the Cincinnati final but couldn’t close it against Sinner in a rain-interrupted contest that never gained momentum.‌

The German’s first major final came at this tournament in 2020, when he lost a five-set thriller to Dominic Thiem. A year later, he progressed to the semis, where again, he was beaten in five sets, this time by Djokovic.

He missed the 2022 US Open before posting a quarter-final effort last year, losing out to Alcaraz. The loss to the Spaniard cost Zverev his third semi-final in as many visits to Queens, but this year, he won’t have to face such elite competition until the penultimate round.

His most significant competitors in this market are Taylor Fritz, whose build-up results have been poor, and Holger Rune, who has only won one match at the US Open.

Women’s US Open 2024

Defending champion Coco Gauff arrives at the US Open in bad shape, and top seed Iga Swiatek, who has a tough draw in New York, is also in doubt.

Aryna Sabalenka is the favourite to go one better than last year and win the title, but I’d prefer to look at the quarter markets where some big names can be taken on.

Jessica Pegula to Reach The Semi Finals – Quarter 1

Having split with coach David Witt in February and missed several events through injury this year, Jessica Pegula now looks ready to launch a serious bid to win her first Grand Slam title.‌

The American reached two semis and one quarter-final in last year’s majors and enters the 2024 US Open in the form indicating she can make a deep run.

Pegula retained her Toronto title earlier this month before progressing to the final in Cincinnati, where Sabalenka beat her.

She could face Swiatek in the last eight. Still, it is not beyond the possibility that the Pole would have been taken out by Mirra Andreeva or Liudmila Samsonova before then, in which case Pegula would have had a fantastic chance of winning the quarter.

Leylah Fernandez to Reach The Semi Finals – Quarter 2‌

Pegula’s most gruelling match en route to the Cincinnati final was against Leylah Fernandez, the 2021 US Open runner-up who has had a steady year.

The Canadian is in the same quarter as Elena Rybakina, who she beat two rounds before her defeat by Pegula. That was Rybakina’s only outing since Wimbledon, and she has just separated from long-time coach Stefano Vukov so her preparation is far from ideal.

Next in the betting for quarter two after Rybakina is Naomi Osaka, who has won just one match in each of her hardcourt events this summer. Then it’s Jasmine Paolini, whose level has dipped over the past month, so there is potential for an outsider such as Fernandez who loves the conditions at Flushing Meadows to emerge from this section.
