Alexander Zverev defends his Olympic title in the first clay court event at the Games since Barcelona 1992.‌

Andy Murray, back-to-back winner in 2012 and 2016, has withdrawn from the singles and will retire from the sport following the conclusion of the doubles competition.

Iga Swiatek is the overwhelming favourite to take women’s singles gold at a venue where she has lifted four French Open titles in five years.

The ‘Queen of Clay’ deserves that status but this is no ordinary Roland Garros competition. Coming off a grass court swing, there could be some volatility in Paris so it may be worth chancing a couple of other contenders.

Men’s Singles – Carlos Alcaraz

With two Grand Slam titles to his name in 2024, Carlos Alcaraz has already had the best year of his career. With health and form on his side, it’s difficult to look past the Spaniard as he attempts to add an Olympic gold medal to his CV.

His compatriot Rafael Nadal is one of only two men to have completed the Career Golden Slam. If Alcaraz can succeed at Roland Garros as he did at the French Open in June, the 21-year-old will be just an Australian Open title away from accomplishing that incredible feat.

Novak Djokovic is on the cusp of history himself, as a win here would put him alongside Andre Agassi – the only man who can boast the Career Super Slam (all majors, Olympics, and the Tour Finals).‌

But Djokovic, who underwent surgery on a torn medial meniscus in June, looked flat as he lost in straight sets to Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final and you have to wonder where he is at physically. Plus, the draw has thrown up a potential clash with Nadal in round two.

World number one Jannik Sinner has withdrawn with tonsillitis, which clears the path for a triumph for Alcaraz who makes the greatest appeal as a sole selection.

Women’s Singles – Coco Gauff

Olympic debutant Coco Gauff is set to become the first US tennis player and youngest American ever to be the nation’s flag bearer for the Opening Ceremony. That honour will serve as extra motivation for Gauff to succeed at Roland Garros, where she was a beaten semi-finalist at the French Open in June.‌

The meeting with Swiatek in the last four meant it was a tall order for Gauff to reach her second final in the French capital, but she is comfortable on the clay and her consistency on the surface holds her in good stead.

Her first-serve percentage will need to improve and she might need a favour from elsewhere to avoid Swiatek, who holds an 11-1 head-to-head advantage over her (5-0 on clay). If the Pole does falter, Gauff could be best placed for victory.

Women’s Singles – Elena Rybakina

Big-serving Kazakh Elena Rybakina narrowly missed out on a medal at Tokyo 2020, losing to Elina Svitolina in the bronze match. This time, she’s the third seed and among the top candidates for a spot on the podium come the end of the event.

Rybakina managed a quarter-final appearance at the French Open followed by a semis berth at Wimbledon but in reality, she should have achieved more over the last two months.‌

Jasmine Paolini played well to cause the upset in the last eight at Roland Garros but there was no excuse for Rybakina’s failure to reach the final at SW19. After taking the opener against the eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova, she tightened up and was unable to replicate her dominant first-set display for the remainder of the contest.

‌Perhaps the pressure of being the tournament favourite at that stage hurt Rybakina. Still, she is the only woman to have beaten Swiatek on clay this year and can overpower anybody if all the elements of her game come together.
