13:00: Matteo Berrettini v Marton Fucsovics – Berrettini -5.5 Game Handicap
With a set of skills that could not be more suited to grass, it’s no surprise that Matteo Berrettini withdrew from the Madrid Open, Italian Open, and French Open to ensure he was in peak condition for the grass court season.
Injuries have blighted the 2021 Wimbledon finalist over the last couple of years but after taking two months off, he impressed en route to a final in Stuttgart on his favourite surface.
Playing pain-free tennis for the first time in a long while, Berrettini said: “I don’t think about the pain or whether or not to play a match, but only about the pitch.”
It could be ominous for Marton Fucsovics, who has not played on grass since losing to Daniil Medvedev in the third round at SW19 in 2023.
13:30: Carlos Alcaraz v Mark Lajal – Lajal +9.5 Game Handicap
Mark Lajal sprung a surprise in Wimbledon qualifying by taking out fourth seed James Duckworth to reach the main draw. The Estonian won a whopping 47 first serve points out of 52 as he swept the Australian aside in straight sets.
His reward is a place on Centre Court on day one of the championships against Carlos Alcaraz. Fresh off the back of securing his maiden Roland Garros trophy, Alcaraz is the second favourite behind Jannik Sinner to lift the men’s singles title at SW19.
The 21-year-old will surely see Lajal off but it might not be as comprehensive as the game handicap spread suggests. Lajal’s serve will be tough to break even for a man with as many tricks up his sleeve as Alcaraz, so I’m taking the underdog to cover with a 9.5 game head start.
15:30: Ekaterina Alexandrova v Emma Raducanu – Over 2.5 Sets
Emma Raducanu’s victory over world number five Jessica Pegula at Eastbourne created some optimism regarding the Brit’s chances of going on a deep run in her home Grand Slam.
Unfortunately for the 2021 US Open champion, she followed up that scalp with an underwhelming display against Daria Kasatkina, losing 6-2 6-2. Raducanu won just 43% of points behind her first serve versus the Russian, which will have given her plenty to work on ahead of the Wimbledon campaign.
Her first-round opponent, Ekaterina Alexandrova, has taken her Wimbledon preparation very seriously, competing in three warm-up events throughout June. A semi-final appearance in Hertogenbosch was her best result.
The oddsmakers can hardly separate the pair and you can see why. Alexandrova is stronger on serve but Raducanu has a superior return game. With little to choose between them, it would be a surprise to see either triumph in two sets.
17:00: Victoria Azarenka v Sloane Stephens – Azarenka -4.5 Game Handicap
Twelve years have passed since Victoria Azarenka reached back-to-back semi-finals at Wimbledon, but the Belarusian came within a few points of a quarter-final berth last year. The 34-year-old is playing well enough to rack up some more wins in the next week or two.
She kicked off her grass court swing with a 6-4 6-2 triumph over world number nine, Maria Sakkari, and can have similar joy against Sloane Stephens who, like Azarenka, achieved her best Wimbledon result more than a decade ago.
Stephens has not advanced beyond the third round at SW19 since 2013, and her last two matches on grass – both straight sets defeats – won’t have filled her fans with confidence.
Azarenka will be all over Stephens’ non-effective serve, and can condemn the American to a fifth first round exit at the All England Club.
