Sunday 2pm: Alexander Zverev v Carlos Alcaraz
Men’s French Open Final, Roland Garros
TV: Eurosport and Discovery+

Carlos Alcaraz wins the match and both players win a set

Alexander Zverev broke his Roland Garros semi-final hoodoo on Friday with a dominant victory over Casper Ruud after a slow start. Still, no opponent he has faced in Paris during this event possesses the variety and resilience of Carlos Alcaraz, who is the heavy favourite to triumph on Court Philippe-Chatrier on Sunday.

Alcaraz’s five-set success against Jannik Sinner wasn’t necessarily a showcase of the best the pair can produce, but it did show the Spaniard’s ability to dig in and outlast a world-class opponent when not at his brilliant best.

The world number three has earned a break of serve in all but one of the sets he has played in this tournament. Alcaraz boasts a return games won rate of 39.4% and can nullify one of Zverev’s biggest weapons, especially on this slower surface.

Zverev has shown, with his three comeback wins over the last two weeks, that he is not one to lie down when faced with adversity on-court. The German can take a set here – perhaps two at a push – but I expect Alcaraz to move within one leg of the career Grand Slam.

Carlos Alcaraz to win 1st set and win match

Alcaraz had got off to a fast start in every match up until the battle with Sinner, taking the first set in each of the first five rounds. The same can not be said for Zverev, who has been faced with a 1-0 deficit three times out of six.

His match odds are too short to get involved with but by adding in the first set win, we can get Alcaraz on side at a palatable price.

It is not just in this competition that Alcaraz holds the first set edge. Since the beginning of 2024, the 21-year-old has taken the opening set in 79.3% of matches, compared with Zverev’s 64.3%.

1st Set Score after 6 games – Carlos Alcaraz 4-2

In all three of the first sets that Zverev has lost at this year’s French Open, he has trailed 4-2 after six games. That hit rate alone makes this bet at a good price worth a shout but Alcaraz’s quality on return makes it even more appealing.

The Wimbledon champion will look to generate break opportunities early on, and he has converted just under half of his break points at this event and throughout the entire clay court season.

This bet will come down to how accurate Zverev is with his first serve in the early going, as his tournament second serve points won percentage is a less than impressive 51.4%.
