It’s turning into quite the year for late bloomer Jasmine Paolini. Even after defeating the fourth seed Elena Rybakina in the quarter-finals at Roland Garros, the Italian went into Thursday’s match against teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva as the underdog but she swept her aside with ease, dropping just four games.
The 28-year-old made just 10 unforced errors in her semi-final victory. While Iga Swiatek is the overwhelming favourite to make it four French Open titles in five years, Paolini’s brand of mistake-free tennis can make life awkward for the Pole, and it might take the top seed a while to figure her opponent out.
Paolini will be well aware that she needs to start fast if she has any chance of unsettling Swiatek. With her energetic and at times flawless performances across the last two weeks in Paris, she has done enough to convince me that she can win at least three games in the opening set.

Naomi Osaka took Swiatek to a tie-break in the first set of their thrilling second-round encounter, and Marie Bouzkova was able to take four games off of the defending champion in the last 32.
Paolini possesses the skills to replicate that, especially if her first serve percentage is anything like it was in her triumph over Andreeva. She landed 80% of her first serves on the day and was not broken once.

Swiatek’s serve is a huge weapon for her and it will be difficult for Paolini to make inroads on return, but this bet landed in Swiatek’s quarter-final against Marketa Vondrousova, and she faced break points in each of her first two service games against Coco Gauff.
Andreeva couldn’t hold to love at all in her loss to Paolini, while Rybakina managed it just once on Wednesday and that was in the final set.
Paolini has won over half of her return points at this year’s French Open, and with Swiatek’s first serve percentage for the competition down at 63.9%, Paolini could well nick some points from her in the first few service games.
