Carlos Alcaraz v Jannik Sinner – Jannik Sinner to Win
Many believe this will be the hallmark rivalry in men’s tennis for years to come, and it promises to be the most fascinating match-up of the French Open so far.
Alcaraz holds five victories over Sinner in nine matches but over the last two years, the Italian has won four of seven. Surprisingly, these two have only played each other twice on clay (winning one apiece) and they haven’t been drawn together at a Grand Slam since 2022.
The clash of styles should make this an engrossing battle and with so little to choose between them, the underdog Sinner looks the more appealing bet. His biggest edge over Alcaraz is his first serve points won percentage, so if he can land enough of them, he can cause all sorts of problems for the world number three.
Casper Ruud v Alexander Zverev – Casper Ruud to Win
It is a huge shame that Novak Djokovic was forced to withdraw from the event but at least, if it’s any consolation, we still have a battle between two of the top eight seeds.
Casper Ruud has played in six clay court tournaments in the build-up to Roland Garros and was triumphant in two of them, the Barcelona Open and the Geneva Open.
The Norwegian wanted to be perfectly conditioned for the French Open having made the last two finals, and so far it is working. The extra day off, due to Djokovic’s injury, has only helped his cause.
Standing between Ruud and a third shot at the title is Alexander Zverev, who he beat in straight sets at this stage in 2023. The German’s Paris preparation was also ideal as he lifted the Italian Open trophy, but he had a relatively easy run there and will find it tough against the clay specialist.
