Danielle Collins v Alize Cornet – Both players to win a set? Yes
- Estimated start time: 12am
- TV: Amazon Prime Video/ Eurosport
I expect this to be an extremely tight matchup in the first encounter between the two opponents. The American, Danielle Collins, has the experience of reaching the semi-finals previously in Melbourne and goes into the match as favourite. However, Alize Cornet is playing some of the best tennis of her career, impressively dispatching the likes of Simona Halep and Garbine Muguruza on her way to her maiden Grand Slam quarter-final.
Both players recorded three-set victories in the 3rd and 4th round and I believe the same trend will continue with both players winning a set on Wednesday.
Jannick Sinner v Stefanos Tsitsipas – Tsitsipas to win the match and both players win a set
- Estimated start time: 4am
- TV: Amazon Prime Video/ Eurosport
A mouth-watering quarter-final match-up pits Stefanos Tsitsipas against one of the brightest prospects in tennis in Jannick Sinner. The Italian has been destined for the top since he burst onto the scene and his rise so far has been impressive. However, he has failed to trouble the true elite with a dismal record of 0-9 against top-five opposition. He also lacks the big Grand Slam experience that Tsitsipas has.
While the Greek’s fitness is still a concern, he was at his battling best against Taylor Fritz in the last round, coming from 2-1 down to eventually reel off two sets in a row in a plucky 3-2 victory. This experience in big-game moments will serve the fourth-seed well in a match of this magnitude. I believe he will have enough to get over the line and reach his third Australian Open semi-final in four years against the talented Italian. I can see it being another close encounter, however, and expect Sinner to pick up at least one set in the match.
Felix Auger-Aliassime v Daniil Medvedev – Medvedev to win the match and both players win a set
- Estimated start time: 8.30am
- TV: Amazon Prime Video/ Eurosport
The pressure appeared to be mounting on tournament favourite Daniil Medvedev in his 4th round encounter with Maxime Cressy. It was the second time in three matches that the Russian has dropped a set and I fancy Auger-Aliassime to continue this trend. The talented Canadian has come through some difficult encounters so far in Melbourne, having engaged in five and four-set battles in three out of previous four rounds.
He has battled well throughout the tournament and even when he has looked down and out has found a way to turn things around. I believe he can use this power to trouble Medvedev again and pick up at least one set in the match. However, I predict the second seed to be too powerful overall and continue his quest to go one better than last year and win a maiden Australian Open title.
