Clara Tauson vs Danielle Collins – Set Betting: Tauson to win 2-1
- Estimated start time: From midnight Friday
- TV: Amazon Prime Video
A fascinating encounter in round three pits Clara Tauson against Danielle Collins in one of the most evenly matched ties of the round. Tauson showed her recent injury worries are well behind her when causing a major upset in round two (albeit one we saw on coming in Thursday’s tipping article) seeing off world number seven and sixth seed Anett Kontaveit 6-2 6-4.
The 19-year-old Dane has created lots of noise in recent years and is quickly showing what she can do on the world stage. Collins has also had her injury doubts lately but has looked good in this tournament so far, opening with two straight-set victories.
Collins emerged victorious in the only previous meeting between the pair but that was on clay and I’m expecting Tauson to carry the momentum of her second-round shock into this hard-court match and prove it was no fluke by seeing off the world number thirty. It won’t be straightforward, however, and I can see the plucky American picking up a set in a tight encounter. Tauson to win 2-1 is the way to go here.
Daniel Evans vs Felix Auger-Aliassime – Set Betting: Evans to win 3-1
- Estimated start time: From 6am Friday
- TV: Amazon Prime Video
On form, Felix Auger-Aliassime may hold the edge leading into this match. He saw off the two players who currently top the outright market in Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev in recent weeks and looked accomplished in doing so. However, he has struggled somewhat in this tournament showing signs of fatigue in taking five sets to beat Emil Ruusuvuori in round one before limping past Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in round two.
Conversely, Dan Evans enters this tie relatively fresh after a straight-set win in round one before benefitting from a walkover in the second round. Evans will have fond memories of the last time these two competitors met in Melbourne, with the Brit victorious over his Canadian foe in straight sets in the final of the Murray River Open down under last February.
The combination of their comparative schedules and head-to-head record gives Evans the edge for me. Although I can see Auger-Aliassime picking up a set, I still expect Evans to be too strong. Evans to win 3-1 is the way to play this one.
Andrey Rublev vs Marin Cilic – Set Betting: Rublev to win 3-0
- Estimated start time: From 10am Friday
- TV: Amazon Prime Video
Andrey Rublev has a seriously impressive record against Marin Cilic, winning all bar one encounter. The only time the Croatian emerged victorious was on a clay court almost seven years ago when the Russian was only eighteen years old. Since then, encounters between the two have gone only one direction with the talented Russian growing into a top-class player.
The now world number six has dominated matches between the two, winning five from five including two last year. Both of those 2021 victories came on hard surfaces, too. Cilic has been in relatively good form since arriving in Australia with good showings in two Adelaide events reaching the semi-finals in both.
Rublev has eased into the third round with two simple straight-set victories and has improved year on year in this tournament, reaching the last-16 in 2020 before a quarter-final appearance last January. I can see the young talent going even deeper into the competition this year, easily taking care of the ageing Croatian on the way. Rublev to win 3-0 looks a bet.
