Novak Djokovic To Win 3-2 In Sets

Contrary to the unpredictability of the women’s tournament this year, the men’s tournament has followed a far more obvious path and Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic coming up against the Russian world number two Daniil Medvedev in the final at Flushing Meadows tonight.

With wins at the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon already secured this year, Djokovic can become the first man since 1969 to complete the singles calendar Grand Slam with a victory over Medvedev tonight. He has had to dig deep in New York this year, needing four sets to overcome each of Kei Nishikori, Jenson Brooksby, Matteo Berrettini and five to squeeze past the in-form German Alexander Zverev in the semi-final.

For added motivation, this game could be the one to define Djokovic’s legacy as the greatest player in the modern era. Coupled with completing the calendar Slam being on the line, this would be his 21st major title and it would push him past both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the all-time Grand Slam race.

Daniil Medvedev, on the other hand, has also had a very good year. He went down 3-0 to Djokovic in the Australian Open, but did manage to pick up wins in Canada, Marseille and Mallorca. His excellent form has continued in Flushing Meadows. He breezed past 12th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets in the semi-final and has dropped only one set on route to the final. That came in an otherwise comfortable quarter-final win over Botic van de Zandschulp.

Djokovic is undoubtably favourite on paper, but Medvedev is equally one of the best hard-court players in the world. Medvedev has smashed 70 aces already in New York and a Russian with nothing to lose is always dangerous. My expectation is for a closer game than some might imagine, but the Serb is usually able to raise his game and pull through in the big moments. I’m tipping Novak Djokovic by the tightest of margins.

#WhatOddsPaddy: Daniil Medvedev to win the first set 6-0, 6-1 or 6-2

I also have a little hunch for the men’s final, whether than hunch should be published on Paddy Power News is another question! Djokovic has often started slowly at Flushing Meadows this year. He has lost the opening set in each of his last four games on route to the final, including going down 6-1 to Jenson Brooksby in the opening set of their round of 16 game.

Conversely, Medvedev has yet to lose an opening set in New York. I could see Medvedev coming hard out of the blocks in set one, hitting a few aces, before being wore down by Djokovic later in the game. There could be a little value in Medvedev winning that first set and I’m tipping one of our #WhatOddsPaddy markets at a decent price.
