Iga Swiatek takes on Irina-Camelia Begu in the third round of Wimbledon on Friday as she continues her quest for her second Grand Slam title. Since winning at Roland Garros last year she has been in scintillating form, picking up two titles this year and getting into the top 10 for the first time.
She overcame Vera Zvonareva in the second round with a straight forward 6-1, 6-3 victory and hasn’t lost a set all week. Begu, however, has bags of experience against top players over the course of her career and can provide a big challenge. She pulled off an upset win over 26th seed Petra Martic in the previous round and I can see her winning a set in this one, though ultimately Swiatek will prove too strong.
Andy Murray has shown glimpses of his best tennis on occasion in the opening two rounds, and getting to the third round is his best showing at a Grand Slam in four years. He turned the clock back in the opening round to upset 24th seed Nikoloz Basilashvili before outlasting Oscar Otte in a five setter on Centre Court.
The nine sets he has played so far are bound to take a toll on his aging body, and a stern test awaits him in the shape of Denis Shapovalov, the talented Canadian youngster who is fresh from a walkover against Pablo Andujar in the second round. The 22 year old will be well rested and be looking to use his big serve and powerful groundstrokes to keep Murray on the run. Murray won’t give up though, and I can see this one going the distance with Shapovalov just edging it 3-2.
Novak Djokovic is looking to win his third consecutive Grand Slam and a sixth Wimbledon title. Having been posed a greater challenge than expected in the opening round against Jack Draper, where he lost the opening set, he went on to defeat Kevin Anderson in straight sets. Kudla has been on a solid run on grass this year and beat French Open quarter-finalist Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in a thrilling five-set match in the opening round, before getting past Andreas Seppi in the previous round.
This will be their third encounter, with Djokovic comfortable when winning both without dropping a set. I don’t see him dropping a set on this occasion either – he has been serving unbelievably well so far, conceding just one break of serve and two break points. Filled with confidence, I expect him to turn on the style in a dominating match and to take a set 6-0.
