They say you never forget your first time, and debuting at the Grand Slam finals stage with an equally inexperienced companion, whom you’ve never stood on the opposite end of a court with before, should make this French Open final a particularly memorable experience for both Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Barbora Krejcikova. Hopefully we’re in for a grandstand finish to a tournament which has been punctuated with media defiance, injuries and early upsets.
Both Krejcikova (33rd) and Pavlyuchenkova (32nd) have toppled higher ranked players on their charge to the final, with the former also having only lost two sets along the way, which is indicative of the form which has her favourite in this match up. She also has recent experience of lifting silverware, winning the recent Strasbourg Open and is also 13-3 on clay this season.
That said, it does look set to be a close affair. Pavlyuchenkova made the semis in the Madrid Open last month and claimed a very impressive win in beating World No. 4, Arnya Sabalenka, earlier in the tournament.
While I do see Krejcikova ultimately coming out on top, Pavlyuchenkova has it in her to win a set, so Krejcikova to Win 2-1 in sets, looks a very nice price to me.
There was also a plethora of service breaks in both women’s semi-finals, a combined 17 between the two games, so drawn out sets could well be expected. Both players showed good composure to close out those situations and it will be interesting to see who will come out on top should the serving performances be repeated on Sunday. Over 1.5 Tie breaks can’t be ruled out either for those anticipating a truly even match up.
