This is a decent second-round fixture between Marin Cilic and Roger Federer. Federer has struggled through injury on and off for the past 18 months, playing only twice in that period. He did not have to be at his usual best in round one against Denis Istomin, coming through in straight sets.
However, he faces a much tougher opponent in Cilic, who himself had a straight-sets win in round one and will be hopeful of upsetting the odds here against the 39-year-old Swiss. Cilic can take this 3-1 or 3-2 and head for round three.
Sorana Cirstea is heavy favourite to win this match, however, she is known to throw in a mad set at various stages. Martina Trevisan had a hard-fought first-round win and enjoyed a run to the quarter-finals last year, losing to the eventual winner and favourite for this year’s tournament Iga Swiatek.
Trevisan is more than capable of pushing Cirstea right to the line, she should win a set in this one.
Belinda Bencic was very impressive in the first round, blitzing Nadia Podoroska 6-0, 6-3. Daria Kasatkina managed to secure a three-set win but the manner in which Bencic got the job done in round one not only makes her a stand out bet, but also puts her firmly in the mix for a run at the title.
Bencic had not been in great form coming into Roland Garros but this place can bring players to life and it certainly looks like it’s the case for Bencic. She should get the job done in straight sets.
