Watch: Iguana causes utter bedlam at Miami Open

We think they underestimated the ‘scale’ of the problem

Comments

There was a rather unusual to stoppage to play at the Miami Open tennis tournament yesterday as an unexpected visitor showed up.

Tommy Haas and Jiri Vesely were locked at 3-3 in the final set, when a rather large iguana showed up on the scoreboard to interrupt proceedings.

Poor Vesely was so distracted by it all, he refused to play on until the reptile was removed from the court despite protests from the umpire telling him it wasn’t a “dangerous” creature.

Haas on the other hand loved it all and quickly grabbed his phone to take a picture with it and the result was wonderful:

Special selfie @miamiopen , thanks for coming out to watch some Tennis ??

Eventually, the iguana made a break for it and escaped to sprint across the court to the other scoreboard, sending ball kids and officials running.

Thankfully the rampaging retile was finally captured and taken away from the court.

The distraction ultimately didn’t cost Vesely in the end, as he went on to win the match 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 and you can watch the video of the incident below:
