Why is Australia in the Eurovision Song Contest?

They love it in the land Down Under.

Australia have a proud record in the Eurovision Song Contest… but the big question is why on Earth they’re even allowed in the competition.

Unless you’ve never looked at a map or a globe, you’ll know that the land of Oz is nowhere near Europe. In fact, it couldn’t be further away as it’s on the other side of the world.

Despite having to stay up through the night to watch the madness unfold, plenty of Aussies love Eurovision and it has a dedicated following.

Due to the popularity of Eurovision in Australia, the country was invited to compete as a special guest in the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest to help celebrate the competition’s 60th anniversary.

Guy Sebastian represented the Aussies in Vienna, Austria and scored an impressive fifth-place finish with ‘Tonight Again’.

Australia has competed at Eurovision every year since with their best result coming in 2016 when Dami Im finished second thanks to her song ‘Sound of Silence’.

What is Australia’s Eurovision 2023 entry?

Progressive metal band Voyager are representing Australia in the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest with their song ‘Promise’.

Voyager progressed to the Grand Final after qualifying from the second semi-final. They are scheduled to perform 15th in the running order.
