Outright
In terms of the outright market and a betting angle, the beauty of Eurovision is that you often get something hitting the post at a huge price. Austria in 2018 were 300/1 in the morning and finished top four. Russia, in recent years, was 50/1 and placed. There’s been loads of examples and I think it’s set up nicely for something outside of Finland and Sweden, the latter of who will win, sadly.
I don’t think any of the podium positions are set in stone. Ukraine, I don’t think they’re going to get anywhere near the telly vote they got last year and they’ll get close to 40 or 50 jury points so they’ll probably finish seventh or eighth. France’s vocals were absolutely dreadful in rehearsals, Israel, I don’t think they’ll get jury points either.
I thought Czech Republic, or Czechia as they’re called here, did really, really well in the semis. I thought it was cohesive, a brilliant stage show, great vocals. Eastern countries are going to lap it up, jurors are going to lap it up. There should be loads of points there for them. They’re a huge price and it’s a delicious each-way price for a top four finish.
The other one is Italy. Sweden are going to clean up in the jury vote but then who else comes next? Italy’s performance in rehearsals were really, really good. His vocals are incredible and Italy always do well with the juries. I could easily see Italy doing very well with the juries and garnering enough telly votes for a placed finish.
At the prices I’d be taking Czech Republic but I wouldn’t discourage anyone from backing anything at a big price from getting into the top four as long as it’s got that realistic path between the jury and the telly vote.
Top 10
For a top 10 finish I really like Czech Republic at around even money. I think that’s absolutely fine, I really think they’re going to do well in the second half of the draw. The song really reminds me of Serbia last year which finished 5th in the end and you could have had odds against for them to finish in the top 10. Czech Republic were 11/4 a few days ago. The momentum is there and they’ve just nailed it. Czech Republic to finish in the Top 10 is pretty much my NAP.
Top 15
The other one I like is Cyprus. That song is just made for jury votes. If he sings it well they’re about even money for a top 15 finish so keep an eye out for that one. They’re going to get plenty of points from Greece and Moldova in the telly vote and then I think it’s just all eyes on the jury vote if he nails the vocals.
Top Balkan Country
Serbia’s good but he’s in the first half of the draw. If I was having a bet I’d take Croatia to be the Top Balkan Country as I know they’re going to get loads of telly votes. Slovenia’s song is brilliant, one of the best songs in it, but it’s hard to see where the votes come from. Albania, Greece and Romania have no chance so in a match between Slovenia and Croatia I’d back the latter.
Top Big Five Country
In the Big Five I think it’s between Spain, Italy and France and I think Italy have such a head start on the jury vote with the vocals, they’re all jury vote songs, I think the price on Italy to be the Top Big Five Country is a good bet.
Best Bets
My best bet is Czech Republic to finish in the Top 10 but at a bigger price I’ll go for Czech Republic each way in the outright market. I think Italy Top Big 5 is also a good bet.
