David Gilbert v Kyren Wilson – Kyren Wilson to win
Gilbert and Wilson both came through difficult semi final tests against seasoned Scotsmen to set up an eye catching semifinal. Gilbert secured a 13-8 win over Stephen Maguire and Wilson matched that score against veteran campaigner John Higgins.
The opening stages of their semifinal have been tight, and it could be a battle of attrition, as the pair strive for a first ever final spot with a semi final the best either one has managed in their career.
Experience and current form gives the edge to Wilson, who lost out in the 2018 and 2021 semis, compared to Gilbert’s sole appearance in 2021. Gilbert’s overall performances in ranked tournaments in 2023/24 leaves a little to be desired as Wilson reached the latter stages of the German Masters and the World Open.
David Gilbert v Kyren Wilson – Over 30.5 frames
If the opening stages of their clash are any measuring stick, Crucible fans could be in for the long haul in this clash, with 30.5 frames a distinct possibility. The move from best of 25 frames to best of 33 stretches out the contest and they needed 20+ to get through the quarters.
Jak Jones v Stuart Bingham – Stuart Bingham to win
Bingham’s 2023/24 form and his World Championship record made victory over Ronnie O’Sullivan in the quarters even more of a shock. A quarterfinal spot at the Scottish open is his best showing in recent months and he has only reached one World Championship semi since 2016.
However, the Ball Run of Basildon should not be underestimated, as the most experienced player left in the tournament.
Jones caused a ripple of his own by beating Judd Trump in his quarter final match up but Bingham’s win over O’Sullivan has put him as a strong favourite to at least make the final.
Jak Jones v Stuart Bingham – Under 30.5 frames
Bingham and O’Sullivan went back and forth in their quarter final meeting, but once the former got up an head of steam, he was away. He won five out of the six final frames to seal a 13-10 victory as O’Sullivan was unable to respond.
