The World Masters of Snooker takes place in Saudi Arabia this week – the first professional snooker event to be hosted in the country.
It forms part of a 10-year deal struck between the World Snooker Tour and the country that will see multiple events, including ranking tournaments, take place.
The inaugural World Masters is a non-ranking event featuring the top 10 players in the rankings and two local wildcards.
Normal rules apply, but there’s a brand new twist. For the first time, a golden ball has been introduced and it is worth 20 points. However, it can only be potted at the end of a maximum 147 break.
Several traditional snooker fans have criticised the event. Still, the WST have ignored this and decided to follow several other big sports that host events in Saudi Arabia.
