There’s no escaping the fact this year’s Six Nations campaign has gone as poorly as it could for France. Having no Antoine Dupont was obviously going to have an effect but it’s now clear to see the influence he has on this French sideside. What is rugby unions loss, is rugby seven’s gain.
Dupont has helped catapult the seven’s side and his effect has been immediate, winning their first series title in 19 years. However, life must go on for Les Blues and after last week’s disaster against the Azzurri, I’m expecting a response in Cardiff.
The French have had two weeks to mull over that result and for a team that holds itself to such a high standard, they will look to get back some respect in the Millennium Stadium. Their opponents are in the midst of their own troubles at the moment and go into this clash without a win. While they pushed Scotland and England close, they were completely outclassed in Dublin.
Wales offer little by the way of an attacking threat and if France can keep their discipline, they’ll struggle to score past the blue wall. France need to come out firing and I’d expect them to use their set-piece, especially the scrum to their advantage. Ireland absolutely ripped the Welsh scrum apart in round three and one would assume Fabien Galthié will see that as the perfect attacking platform. I’m taking France -8 here.

As mentioned, the French will be looking for an immediate response this week. They’ll have heard all the media backlash and they’ll be keen to act on that as soon as possible. France should look to push the impetuous early and get a foothold in the game.
Their pack is far superior to Wales so expect them to utilise the set piece and quick pop ball of the base of the ruck to condense this Welsh defence. Doing that will open up space. France need to bounce back, they need this win a lot more than Wales, so expect them to look to start fast. This bet has good value.
