What is the Calcutta Cup? Everything you need to know about Scotland v England Six Nations

Will Scotland win four in a row?

England v Scotland - Guinness Six Nations

The Six Nations is well underway and while all eyes are on which nation will win the famous trophy, let’s not forget about the Calcutta Cup.

It is awarded to the winner of the Scotland v England match played annually in the Six Nations and is the oldest trophy in international rugby union.

Six separate trophies are awarded under the Six Nations umbrella but because of its wealth of history, this is by far the most talked about.

The first contest in 1879 ended in a draw with England claiming the first victory a year later.

Scotland have held the trophy for the past three years and have won it overall 47 times, but still fall short of England’s record of 82 victories.

This year’s edition will take place at Murrayfield in Edinburgh on Saturday, February 24, with Scotland looking to win the cup for the fourth consecutive time, something they haven’t done in over 100 years.

So far in this year’s Six Nations, England have won their opening two games, with Scotland winning one and losing the other.
