The stage has been set. With both Ireland and the New Zealand All Blacks making it out of their respective pools, this will be the second time in a row that this matchup has come about in the quarterfinals and for the sanity of Irish supporters, let’s hope the result is a different one.

There’s been quite a bit of chatter around how the All Blacks are smarting from their home series loss to Ireland, and how one Joe Schmidt (former Leinster and Ireland boss) has had the guts of 12 months to work his magic on their structures. The ragged team Ireland faced in that November 2022 series has remained largely unchanged as far as the main characters in the match-day 23 however, the accuracy and directness of their play has absolutely improved.

It’s not to be forgotten that Ireland will have their own desire for revenge too, having been unceremoniously booted from the 2019 version of the Rugby World Cup in Japan, by New Zealand.

There’s a feeling of Master vs Apprentice, old-money vs new school and traditional vs modern in this clash. Storylines here write themselves; Schmidt vs Farrell (albeit indirectly) is the clearest link between the sides.

Let’s get to a couple of bets:

Half Time Result – Ireland

One of the common themes of Ireland’s series win down in New Zealand in 2022 reared it’s head last week vs Scotland, and I’m predicting it to happen once again this Saturday. Ireland and Leinster alike have exploded out of the starting blocks in the biggest games time after time, whether that’s through set-piece magic or blistering pace of play does not matter.

With 60,000 Irish expected in Paris, once the famed Kapa o Pango (presumably not Ka Mate) Haka is complete, there’ll be no lack of energy on either side, but I fancy Ireland to take the lead by half time and doubt if they relinquish it from there.

Strike moves, open play and set pieces – Sheehan can score from all the above. With his health no longer in question, expect the man who I consider the best hooker remaining healthy, at this world cup (Malcolm Marx is out) to run rampant here with big carries and much more.

7/5 looks a fine mark for Sheehan to score as often he’s the focal point of set moves and or phase play combinations. Being a hooker with tremendous pace (shout out Keith Wood and Sean Cronin) Sheehan will have his opportunities, it’s up to him to take one.

Ireland -2 H’cap Betting

I’ve left this one ‘til last on the list but it’s the most obvious should you deign to read my ramblings above. There’s a fairly green tint to these three picks and in my opinion, rightly so. Now I wouldn’t put anyone off taking a half time/full time double result bet here either at around 6/5 but I’ve already included the half time price as a bet I’d like to take.

The 2-point handicap here is providing an opportunity to bet on Ireland to win the game by a mere penalty and before it crosses over to that all important number of +/-3 points on the handicap, even money here on the -2 looks to be a beautiful price.
