Rugby World Cup – Pool B
Ireland v Scotland, 8pm
Stade de France, Saint-Denis
ITV1, Virgin Media
Two of the home nations meet on Saturday to decide their World Cup fate. For Ireland it’s simple – win and you’re onto the quarterfinals in Paris. For Scotland? Not so much. They will need to break a five-year streak of losses to Ireland, and they will need to do it with some serious conviction.
To guarantee themselves first in the pool, the men that Head Coach Gregor Townsend selects will need to end Ireland’s 16-game winning streak by a margin of 21 points or more. I won’t get into every permutation here, but it’s complicated.

Last time out versus the Scots, there were a few bizarre occurrences.
World Player of the Year Josh van der Flier was throwing into lineouts, Cian Healy was scrummaging at hooker when both Sheehan and Kelleher were forced out of the game and yet, Ireland came away with a storming win 22-7. This Irish team seems to cover all their bases through the forethought of Andy Farrell and with that in mind, they will certainly be ready for all eventualities as far as group permutations go.
Sidenote: Cian Healy looks to be ready to return to rugby having been left out of the squad after an injury in the final warm-up game, though someone else would need to be dropped from the current 33-man squad to make room for him – Robbie Henshaw has pulled up lame with a hamstring injury and is doubtful for the quarterfinals should Ireland progress.
Onto the betting, I have two picks for the game, and they are as follows:
Handicap: Ireland -11
I take huge confidence from the game in Murrayfield in the 6 Nations earlier this year which Ireland won 22-7. Scotland were buzzing with energy at the time, Sione Tuipulotu and Huw Jones – or Huwipulotu as some call him – were tearing opposition midfields asunder and Finn Russell was pulling the strings like the magician he is.
This time around, however, Ireland are the ones who should be buzzing.
Scotland got beaten to a pulp by the tournament favourites South Africa 18-3 in their opening game and since then haven’t really been tested by either Tonga or Romania.
Sure, they might come into the fixture knowing this was what it would come down to all along for them, but, as mentioned above, this Ireland team is well prepped, capable of adapting to anything and barring a disaster.
I expect a comprehensive victory over an unfortunate Scottish side. Unfortunate they were placed in this pool, that is.

Worth a shot here at the price and we’re the only book you’ll find with each-way betting on the first tryscorer market!
Beirne so far this tournament has racked up three tries in three games, played 80 minutes in each game, and carried the ball once roughly every nine minutes on average (26 carries in 240 mins). All this makes for quite a nice proposition at a larger price than the likes of Hansen, Lowe or Sheehan.
