Okay, so new year, new you, yeah?
How’s the lycra looking as you start plodding the roads at literally the worst time of the year to spend substantial amounts of time outside?
Or maybe you’re going to add a few new recipes to your repertoire in 2024 – we’ll approach your sushi efforts with a caution for the time being if it’s all the same to you?
What about putting together a smashing, five-fold €10 each-way acca (cost €20) that pays out six figure at a stake that would buy you two pints of porter and a packet of nuts in your local?
Sounds pretty good.
Well one punter made it a reality on New Year’s day with a quality quintet of equine calls across Cheltenham and Musselburgh cards while you were setting out out a for a chilly New Year run.
The magic started at Musselburgh – where else? – in the 1:10, where Benson was not hedging as he held off Holmes St Georges to win at 4/1 and bring up the first leg of this fab fivesome.

Next up was Stumptown at Cheltenham in the 1:30, who left our traders, well, stumped as he defied 5/1 odds in the Paddy Power Handicap Chase to make it two-from-two
And another correct call at Prestbury Park in the 2:05 saw 11/2 Shakem Up’arry rustle the feathers of our number-crunchers further as our punter shaped made it a terrific treble, but there was more to come.
15 minutes later they were certainly sweating when Fidelio Vallis his the right note at a sweet 7/1 in the 2:20 at Musselburgh.
These four bets combined added up to odds of over 1,500/1 – but it didn’t stop there because Butch in the 2:40 back at Cheltenham came through for another 7/1 success.
That meant our Dublin-based punter turned their €10 each-way stake(€20) into a cool €125,415.60 return on a frankly ridiculous 12,000/1 punt.
After staggering back to his feet having read the results, Paddy Power spokesman Paul Binfield said: “We sponsored three races at Cheltenham today to celebrate the New Year and then one of the shrewdest punters ever not only got all three of those winners correct, for good measure they also smashed into a couple at Musselburgh. Last night will be nothing compared to their celebrations tonight. Cheers!”
