Scientist Stephen Hawking the favourite for new £50 note

Brainiac Stephen Hawking's thoughts might have been out of this world, but he could be in your back pocket soon according to our £50 makeover market...

Following the Bank of England announcement that the £50 note is set for a makeover, we’ve priced up who will be on the front of the note.

And we make famed prof Stephen Hawking the favourite at 9/1, a tribute to the theoretical physicist who died in March this year.

Mary Seacole (10/1) has also been a popular selection, following a call from Labour MP Wes Streeting to feature the pioneering British-Jamaican nurse on the note.

Another front-runner is Margaret Thatcher (16/1), with over 10,000 people already signing a petition to spotlight the first female Prime Minister.

Edith Cavell (12/1), Richard Attenborough (20/1), William Blake (20/1), Beatrix Potter (22/1) and Francis Bacon (25/1) are also in the betting.

After several outcries on social media, we’ve rated both Gareth Southgate and Harry Maguire as 500/1 shots.

Our own face for the fifty quid Paddy Power said: “Stephen Hawking is the favourite to be on the new £50 note, and that’s not bias from us, we promise.

“Mary Seacole and Margaret Thatcher have both proved popular, with campaigns running for the Bank of England to feature either woman on the front. Though plenty are still holding out on Harry Maguire riding a unicorn to be the chosen one.”
