When are US Presidential Election results announced? When will we know Harris v Trump winner?

Could be a while...

A voting slip being posted in a ballot box for the US Presidential Election

Here we go, folks.

The biggest election in a generation is finally here as Kamala Harris and Donald Trump’s battle for the keys to the White House reaches a climax.

Our friends on the other side of the pond head to the polls on Tuesday, 5th November and we could be waiting a while to discover whether Harris will be upgrading her office in the White House or Trump is heading back to power.

US Presidential Election odds can be found on the Paddy Power website and Paddy Power app, otherwise, keep on reading to find out when the winner will emerge.

The polls will need to close before counting can get underway – and the USA’s massive size means there is no blanket time for all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

They will begin to slam shut in the eastern states from 18:00 ET (that’s 22:00 in our neck of the woods) before the next batch including the key battleground of Pennsylvania shut their doors at 20:00 ET (00:00 for us).

The likes of Michigan and Wisconsin will not accept any more voters past 21:00 ET (01:00) and the last batch of votes in the most-western states of Hawaii and Alaska have to be cast by 00:00 ET (04:00).

If the knife-edge polls prove to be incorrect then a clear winner could emerge pretty quickly. The Associated Press called Trump as the winner in 2016 at 02:29 ET (06:29) on the morning after the election.

If the polls are correct, however, then it could take a while for Harris or Trump to claim victory. In 2020, it wasn’t until 11:26 ET (15:26) on the 7th November – a full four days after the election – that Joe Biden was declared as the winner by the Associated Press, despite it not even being that close in the end.

Expect plenty of legal wrangling, court cases, controversy and conspiracy theories if it’s tight.

So we could be waiting a while for the result, but it is worth remembering that it’s just a projection because the winner won’t be officially rubber-stamped by Congress until Monday, January 6th next year!
