Britain favourites to win ‘Scallop War’ with France as fishermen clash

The French and British are at war – but this battle won’t be fought over bullet shells, but shellfish.

Fishermen are clashing over scallops, around 12 nautical miles off the Normandy coast.

While French law restricts the scallop fishing season to between October 1st and May 15th, British boats can legally trawl all year round.

With things coming to blows, we have priced up who will win the ‘scallop war’, with Britain the odds-on favourites (8/11).

That’s based on whether the French will get their wish to stop British fishing before October 1st – which the bookmakers think is unlikely, offering odds of Evens (1/1).

Spokesman Paddy Power said: “It looks like both sides are coming at this one from a different angle, but I think the answer is bait: the French simply need to float the Brexit line.

“That should hook the British government, and lure them into a compromise. Otherwise, we could witness a reel big fall-out across the Channel. Again.”

WILL THE BRITISH POSTPONE SCALLOP FISHING UNTIL OCTOBER 1st?
