Odds slashed on an Irish election before New Year’s Day

Will Ireland be going to the polls before the New Year dawns?

With Fianna Fáil apparently ready to put a vote of no confidence in on Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald, Paddy Power have slashed the odds on an Irish General Election taking place before Christmas.

We’ve moved their price in from 10/1 to 11/10 – with Fitzgerald’s chances of no longer being a Minister on New Year’s Day heavily odds-on (8/11).

Even if the Tánaiste holds on until after the Christmas period, we reckon it is 1/4 for the next General Election to take place in 2018.

Asked about the possibility of an early election spokesman Paddy Power said: “The supply and confidence relationship between Fianna Fáil and the government is at breaking point – presumably because the Tánaiste isn’t supplying much confidence.

“The Taoiseach may be standing by his deputy, but Fitz surely the end of either her career – or the relationship between Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.”
