Pope Francis 14/1 to drink a pint of Guinness on visit to Ireland

Can his Holiness be tempted into a pint of the black stuff when he arrives on the Emerald Isle?

Paddy Power is offering odds of 14/1 for Pope Francis to drink a pint of Guinness when he comes to Ireland in August 2018.

We’ve released our latest Pope betting specials after Taoiseach Enda Kenny today confirmed the Pope will travel to Ireland in 2018, the first visit of a sitting pontiff to the country since 1979.

The confirmation came after a meeting at The Vatican, where the pair discussed a range of issues including climate change and youth unemployment – it’s not known if Ireland’s epic win over the All Blacks was mentioned.

Preparations to welcome The Pope on the Emerald Isle are sure to begin in earnest, and we’ve opened up the betting on where the Pope will celebrate mass – unsurprisingly making Dublin heavy favourite at 1/50.

Knock (1/14) is another heavy favourite to be ‘blessed’ by the presence of Pope Francis, with Cork next on the scroll at 1/5.

Pope Francis will be expected to attract a crowd that Westlife could only dream of, and Paddy offers odds of 11/4 that there’ll be between 1,000,001 – 1,250,000 people attend an event in Dublin, similar to the number that attended Pope John Paul II’s mass in 1979.

We’re not ruling out a knockout meeting between Pope Francis and UFC star Conor McGregor either – with odds of 8/1 available for a bizarre union.

It’s not the first time Paddy Power has dipped its toe into Vatican life. In 2013 the bookie became the first company to offer odds on the Next Pope when Pope Benedict XVI sensationally resigned.

We also once offered 100,000/1 on the Pope John Paul to sign for Glasgow Rangers, and in 2013 we sent Dennis Rodman to the Vatican to promise money back to our punters if the pope replacing Pope Benedict was black.

Asked for his thoughts on the visit of the pope Paddy Power said: “It’s not every day that The Pope visits your country and what better way to welcome him than with a pint of Guinness. I just hope the Popemobile is waiting at Dublin airport on arrival as that taxi rank has been a bloody nightmare recently.”
