Women’s 48kg Judo – Daria Bilodid to Win Gold

Paula Pareto is the defending champion from Rio and this will likely be her fourth and final games. Flag bearer for Argentina in 2016, she has dominated this weight class for over a decade but at 35 a gold is probably unlikely.

Tokyo is a happy hunting ground for Ukraine’s Daria Bilodid having won her second World Championship here in 2019. She’s not had the best of years and has found it tough against Kosavan and gold medal favourite Distrai Krasniqi of late.

The Ukrainian bombshell pulled out of the European final against Krasniqi in April due to a slight knock but she’s back to full fitness and ready to add the biggest gold medal of all to her collection.

Men’s Road Race Cycling – Primoz Roglic to Win

A 134 man peloton is set to tackle what has been described as a horrendous 234-kilometre course on Saturday. Despite the notable absence of World Champion Julian Alaphilippe as he focuses on defending his title at the Worlds in Flanders at the end of this year, Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar will be present, as will third-place finisher Richard Carapaz.

Slovenian Pogacar is the worthy favourite here and the tough climbs will suit his talent for mountains. Wout van Aert is also a superb climber and his fellow Belgian Remco Evenepoel who comes here fresh, is also one to watch. GB duo of Adam and Simon Yates could well out-cycle their big odds.

The value may well lie in Pogacar’s Slovenian’s teammate Primoz Roglic as his early leave from the Tour means he will have had additional time to prepare for the Olympics. Pogacar held up Roglic’s number in tribute to his countryman in the final stage of the Tour de France this year, so he could likely lead the squad. It’s been a tough few weeks but this could be the motivation he needs to strike gold.

Women’s Individual Epee – Choi In-Jeong to Win a Medal

Olympic fencing has long been dominated by Europe but the tide may turn at the Tokyo Olympics with South Korea in particular sending a strong team. Choi In-Jeong is first up for Korea in the women’s individual Epee and fresh from her win at the Kazan Epee World Cup in March she’s got a great chance. It’s a competitive field but the price for her to win a medal is fair.

Olympics Day 1 tips:

Women’s 48kg Judo – Daria Bilodid to Win Gold
Men’s Road Race Cycling – Primoz Roglic to Win Mens Road Race
Women’s Individual Epee – Choi In-Jeong to Win a Medal
