The first medals will be dished out on Saturday July 24 in sports including weightlifting, taekwondo, shooting, judo, fencing, men’s road race cycling and archery.

Swimming and rowing normally dominate proceedings in the first week of an Olympic Games and Tokyo 2020 is no different with both sports boasting busy schedules from Saturday July 24 through to Sunday August 1.

The track and field action is the cornerstone of every Olympics and the athletics programme picks up the baton on Friday July 30.

When are the 100m finals, I hear you asking? Well, the women’s sprinting showcase takes place on Saturday July 31 and the men’s final is scheduled for the following day.

There’s a final rush for medals on Sunday August 8 before the Closing Ceremony at 20:00 local time (12:00 BST).
