Dallas and Cincinnati. About four months ago, if you had told someone this would be the Super Bowl matchup, you probably wouldn’t have had a tonne of pushback.
But the loser of this matchup is essentially eliminated from postseason contention well before Christmas.
Is that an indictment of both teams? Yes, but for very different reasons.
Long before Dak Prescott was ruled out for the season, the insecurity in camp about whether the Cowboys would pay CeeDee Lamb and their quarterback was evident.
Cincinnati is a total defensive collapse due to their indifference to fixing that side of the ball.
Even in games they should win, the Bengals cannot contain even the most basic of offenses. And in games the Cowboys should lose, they seem to stick around regardless.
In a game like this where neither team has a flow they can lean on, it’s always going to finish up tense, and getting a 5.5 point buffer is very generous.

Over the last two weeks, the Cowboys have played two decent defensive units in the Commanders and the Giants.
In that time, they combined for 61 points and two wins. Rico Dowdle ensures that the clock ticks by, but Cooper Rush is north of 65% completion rate in that span, so it’s not a one-way-go.
Given that the Bengals can’t stop the run, Dallas will have scores available—and despite not landing many actual wins, it’s very clear that the Bengals can throw the ball against anyone.

Ja’Marr Chase has been a showstopper in a year where he didn’t get a deal. But another player now headed towards free agency and showing up week after week is Tee Higgins. Chase is certainly getting volume, but Higgins has emerged as the volume guy underneath – and Burrow is very comfortable looking his way as a primary read.
Since returning from injury two weeks ago, Higgins has fourteen receptions for 217 yards and two scores. Doesn’t sound like a WR2 to me.

Dallas have faced teams with exceptional corners over the last month, and while Rush himself obviously has a limited arm, it’s an entirely fair projection to think Lamb getting receptions to justify his deal is going to be a theme going forward.
The issue has been, due to tight coverage, his end zone targets have been severely limited. He should benefit from a Bengals backend that can’t cover anyone.
Pickens, Freiermuth, Dissly, Andrews, Bowers – the players you know the ball is going in the end zone, and yet Cincy have coughed up a touchdown to each of them over the last four weeks.
