Green Bay +3.5
Green Bay are still my pick for the Super Bowl, so to not pick them to cover an underdog spread on the road to a team they’ll likely see again in the playoffs feels silly.
Yes, psychologically, Dan Campbell is an imposing monster that can wear you down. But he’s also one to let emotion to get the better of him in key situations.
This is why I think Green Bay’s focus on the task at hand should see them prevail, but I’m just keeping the more-than-a-field-goal spread onside in the off-chance this game is decided by a single play.
Am I concerned that the Lions beat them convincingly in Lambeau earlier in the year? Yes, to a degree. But the Pack have found their groove since and have won three on the spin, and all three in very different fashions.
They’re beginning to crystalise the knack of winning games in multiple ways, no longer just relying on clever play design.
Over 51.5 Points
Now, clever play designs also exist in this game, and it would be remiss of me not to mention two of the best play callers in the NFL, Matt LeFleur and Ben Johnson.
And the best thing about these games is that coaches always keep the wrinkles up their sleeves for the second meeting between divisional rivals.
There’s going to be a tonne of explosive plays in this game, because the urgency on Green Bay’s side to lock down a playoff berth is only exceeded by the Lions’ desire to be the number one seed.
And, to be fair, should this game go to the Pack, they’re only a game behind them in the NFC North.
David Montgomery to Score Anytime
The one thing that Green Bay cannot contend with schematically, is the degree of smashmouth football we’ll see in the interior.
When Detroit are in the red zone, they’re handing it off to Monty and they inevitably score thereafter.
David Montgomery didn’t score last week, and given the tendencies that have been on display for two years, he should probably be shorter than the already-short price he is to find the end zone.
This also ties into another piece of personnel intel that I’ll go into for my fourth and final selection.
Jahmyr Gibbs – Under 19.5 Receiving Yards
Jahmyr Gibbs is in the doghouse at the moment. And this is primarily because of an Instagram post he put up last week in the meeting room at the Lions facility.
On the whiteboard behind him was all the coding for their protection calls. For the unwashed, a protection call is a sequence the quarterback calls out before the ball is snapped if he needs to adjust his offensive line due to a suspect blitz.
If the opposition team has that, they can adjust themselves and make it moot. Gibbs had just nine carries last week compared to Montgomery’s 21. He also only had 17 receiving yards. Expect this trend to continue.
