LA Rams to win

I’ll be killed for this, perhaps rightly so, but an upset is all we need for Sean McVay to fall back into the conversation of best coach in the league. This is definitely going against the grain and I fully accept that, but the Vikings’ record is not reflective of how efficient they are on either side of the ball.

Sam Darnold spent the first month of the season in the MVP conversation for God’s sake. And while all of this has been happening, the Rams have been getting slightly healthier.

It’s rare I take a shot on an underdog on TNF, but when they’re at home on a short week, it does steer me more towards them, particularly with them coming off a game against the Raiders, while the Vikes had to contend with the most physical team in the NFL.

And there’s obviously nothing to dislike about the price we’re getting here, either.

Under 48.5 points

The Rams will operate in the short game, so they don’t give Brian Flores a chance to unload his exotic blitzes. He’s the best in these moments in the league, so if Matthew Stafford needs eight-plus yards on third down too often, this won’t go the way we need it to.

But Sean McVay knows this better than you and me. He makes quick motions to his merry band of nimble receivers; trap runs for Kyren Williams, and tight-end screens. It’s been the way for so long and generally comes to the fore in big moments.

Another reason to hammer the under here is that the Rams have dealt with this offensive scheme in the past. The Vikings run a Shanahan-esque offense, and the Rams’ sole win in the early part of the season came against the San Francisco 49ers.

This is a similar matchup for many reasons, and I suspect they will replicate that effort.

The one thing Darnold has gotten very good at, is identifying when a team is taking away his favourite target.

With the Vikings’ Justin Jefferson taking up a backend bracket coverage and the Rams not having the personnel to go heavy on coverage against good secondary reads, I think Addison is the most likely recipient of a surplus amount of deep shots here.

Particularly when you consider the re-emergence of TJ Hockenson from injured reserve, it just makes Addison’s ability to stretch the field a bit more important given the tight end’s ability to draw attention from a safety downhill rather than deep-half.

Kyren Williams – Over 71.5 rushing yards

Kyren Williams is a great one for this line for several reasons. The first is that the Rams are still committed to the run, even when losing.

The second is that he’s the only runner McVay trusts.

Third, he’s very effective down-to-down, meaning he rarely records rushes for negative yardage, which takes him off the field.

And finally, he’s their third-down back, so he will always be available on a given snap.
