Tampa Bay +3.5
A home primetime game, coming off the back of their best offensive performance of the season? In my mind, these two teams are evenly matched. And for all that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers might struggle to rush the passer, they had six different players get involved in a sack last week, five sacks, with one split.
They’re naturally more inclined to keep a passer in the pocket than go all-in on trying to disrupt him, which makes them a naturally bad opponent for Lamar Jackson to face anyway, and the strength of their defence is against the opposing running backs.
That much hasn’t changed since they had Tom Brady under centre.
Their scoring power is just too much to deny here, particularly at home and especially against a team who still lacks a number one pass catcher. But more on that later.
Over 49.5 points
The Baltimore Ravens play incredibly soft coverage on the back end, meaning they’re happy to give up completions to limit explosive plays.
The issue for them is that Tampa Bay have two key threats to counter this. Chris Godwin might be the best receiver in the league this year, and he’s scoring on quick hitches, screens, and concepts, and no blanket coverage can accommodate that. If the ball is in his hands with how he’s feeling now, they’re scoring.
This is particularly true if Mike Evans is limited, given his hamstring injury. Now, without Mike Evans, they just need someone to stretch the field to work underneath with Godwin and Cade Otton, so that’s not as big a loss as you might think.
This is particularly true now that they’ve found red zone efficiency from two running backs other than Rachaad White: Bucky Irving and Sean Tucker.
And for Baltimore? Well, we know exactly how they finish and extend drives.
Mark Andrews – Over 28.5 receiving yards
Mark Andrews is getting a lot of flak at the moment. Much of it is fantasy football-driven, don’t get me wrong, but he’s started the season incredibly slowly. And while some of his indifferent performances in previous seasons could be attributed to ill-health, he’s been fine to start 2024. He’s just been absent.
Andrews, in his last two games, had four receptions for 55 yards against Baltimore and three receptions for 66 yards against Washington.
You might think I’m chasing fool’s gold somewhat, but to get a line that’s just over half of his worst showing in the last fortnight seems like too good a value play to pass up.
Mark Andrews anytime touchdown scorer
And just to be even more bullish, Baltimore will play a team that sells out to stop the run in the high-end zone. They’re going to leave everyone in single coverage to commit three bodies to Derrick Henry and send a spy to cover Lamar.
Even at his age he’s still their best separator in tight situations, and Lamar knows that only too well.
