New York Giants (+5.5)
We had a couple of perceptions about these teams before the season started. The first one was that Dallas could be a contender for the best defensive unit in the entire NFL, following on from last year’s success.
The second, and final, was that Daniel Jones just would not cut it. Neither of those things appear to be true, through three weeks.
Dallas have coughed up 89 points, having faced Deshaun Watson, Derek Carr and the worst Ravens team since Ray Lewis ate cereal for breakfast. And DJ?
Well, he’s looked erratic, but you can make a living by targeting the same guy over and over again. And finally, for the first time since Odell, the Giants have an elite wide receiver. More on him later.
But getting 5.5 points is good enough to me for a home game on a short week, and given they look like they might be able to run the ball, too – who knows? Maybe the Giants can even win straight up.
Jake Ferguson to Score A Touchdown
The biggest issue that plagued Dallas coming into the season (and boy, there were a few) was not the lack of paying Dak or CeeDee. It was actually the fact they had no second wide receiver who’d be able to take attention away from Lamb.
Jalen Tolbert and Brandin Cooks might occasionally look functional, but it’s tough sledding. Last week, Jake Ferguson wasn’t even sure he was playing. And now, he’s clearly Dak’s second-favourite target.
Seeing him claw in six receptions for 95 yards, Ferguson runs the seams as well as anyone, so we’re not hamstrung by needing targets in the red zone to score. Back the big man.
Malik Nabers – Over 5.5 Receptions
He is attracting targets at a bizarre rate. Maybe the lines haven’t adjusted themselves properly yet because he’s a rookie, or they think Diggs will shadow him.
To the latter, Nabers moves around the formation enough that he can work the secondary corners other than Diggs – and to the former – so? He’s already a top-ten receiver in football, and Diggs won’t be locking him down regardless.
The interesting thing about his development is seeing him make all kinds of catches. Nabers coming out of college was a great prospect, but the only question was around contested catches because he always had so much space at NCAAF level. Well, that’s been put to bed nice and early.
Jake Ferguson – Over 4.5 Receptions
We’ve spoken about the touchdown, but Ferguson is a go-to receiver nice and early in reads because he’s close to the line of scrimmage.
And the one thing the Giants have done well is orchestrate a pass rush. The years of Cowboy offensive lines being immovable look to be over, and that ball will need to come out fast.
It was a big reason he benefited so much last week, and appears to be the security blanket Mike McCarthy has built into this system.
