San Francisco (-4.5)

Travelling across the entire country on opening night is a very tough ask for any team. Santa Clara will be electric, and the entire Niners locker room will be on a high post-Trent Williams and Brandon Aiyuk getting their extensions.

Then you’ve got Aaron Rodgers, who’s fresh off a horrific injury with the world’s media focused on him, with an arsenal of weapons that is incredibly top-heavy.

One of these teams can run the ball far better than the other, and while I think Robert Saleh knows the Kyle Shanahan offense well from his time there, no head coach adds more wrinkles to their tried-and-tested on an annual basis than the 49ers playcaller.

The Jets might have one of the best receivers in football – but the Niners have four of them. That includes..

Christian McCaffrey Over 50 Receiving Yards

Brock Purdy is very good at throwing on time. And while that’s the one thing that Saleh can accommodate for on the back-end, it just means that expansive deep coverages open up the check-downs to the best check-down option in all of football.

McCaffrey will benefit from a tonne of internal pressure being put in Purdy’s face by Quinnen Williams, and those quick dump-offs will add up as the Jets try and limit the explosive plays. That’s always been the way teams have approached San Francisco, for better or for worse.

Christian McCaffrey to Score Anytime

I’d like to say that Kyle’s redzone offense will be more fun to watch inside the ten, but they probably don’t see a point given CMC’s success rate in pounding it in between the tackles. He’s also one of few running backs in football who you think could break a 70-yard run now.

That, and the raw numbers – 21 touchdowns in 16 games last year – suggest he’s the clear play in the run game. We’re not going to see a lot of Jordan Mason here, and that saves us from split carries. And thankfully, Brock Purdy isn’t in the business of vulturing touchdowns either.

The Jets interior is good, but Javon Kinlaw plays very lean for his 320lbs. It’s probably why the Niners didn’t keep him, come to think of it.

Breece Hall Over 26.5 Receiving Yards

And for the Jets? Well, Aaron Rodgers is going to need to get the ball out quickly, no matter how assured he is of his recovery. Having Bosa screaming towards you is a scary sight, and when you consider how much Aaron Jones benefited from the Rodgers trademark of using his safety blanket, Hall could be in for quite a night underneath.

Brandon Staley joined the Niners to coordinate some back-end coverages, and his entire tenure at Los Angeles consisted of overly-complex coverages between safety adjustments and rolling corners.

That won’t fly with this unit, and their tendency will be to rush four and take away the deep part of the field. With no pass-catching tight end to note, those opportunities will land at Breece Hall’s feet.
