Sunday 11.35pm: San Francisco 49ers @ Kansas City Chiefs
Super Bowl Final
Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Las Vegas, Nevada
TV: Sky Sports Main Event
When you consider the Chiefs and the 49ers, it might seem futile to look at the first Super Bowl matchup between the two. But in actuality, these two coaches, Andu Reid and Kyle Shanahan, have had such sustained success doing things their way, that there’s little to no point in deviating at this stage of their careers.
Andy Reid has his worst roster in nearly a decade and they’re still AFC Champions. Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers have carried another slightly-above-the-mean level quarterback to a near-MVP vote.
If you go back to their last meeting for the Vince Lombardi trophy, they had certain tendencies that it’s almost impossible to get away from. The Niners will start their game script impeccably and take an early lead.
Kyle Shanahan then begins to believe in both his and his defensive coordinator’s gameplan as the Chiefs struggle to move the ball only to realise that his stagnation and Andy Reid’s tendency to set you up to believe a trend, only to lose your convictions against you in key moments in the second half, leave the Niners rudderless and empty-handed again.
Believe me, as a fan of an AFC West team – there’s little to no point denying the inevitable.
Kansas City Chiefs to Win
Do you back the best player to ever play the sport on a team who have now developed a winning culture second only to the New England Patriots of old?
Or do you side with the shrewd pick of the 49ers because their roster is better?
It’s true that the 49ers’ offensive weapons are better this time around, but what they still don’t have is an efficient quarterback who can produce off-the-cuff, particularly against a Chiefs front that brings internal rather than edge pressure. The Chiefs should finish the night as back-to-back Super Bowl champs.

One of the key things to remember is that these two defenses are arguably better than they were the last time they met. Not only has an identity shift taken place in Kansas City whereby Patrick Mahomes just does enough for their defense to close down the opposition, but it’s now their blueprint for winning big games, too.
Mahomes sometimes doesn’t even need to play well anymore. And that generally means Andy Reid can call a gameplan that’s more balanced, more nuanced and more conservative.
This will be a crawl.
Travis Kelce – Under 6.5 Receptions
The Niners will believe that if they shut him down, they’ll win the Super Bowl. They did this exact thing four years ago when they limited Tyreek Hill to all but one huge play late in the game with the fourth down conversion on what’s now known as the ‘wasp’ play.
Reid will leave them to rotate their coverage here, until late in the game, when he needs him, and he’ll call the adjustment based off the Niners’ overconfidence in nullifying him.
Rashee Rice – Over 67.5 Receiving Yards
Rashee Rice is going to be the key to moving the chains. Between him and Pacheco, the Chiefs will use motion and mismatches on the boundary rather than across the middle of the field, and his movement before the snap is their key advantage.
Nobody else on the roster is capable of doing it, so this line is about as safe as it comes – particularly if Joe Thuney is injured as they need the ball out quickly.
Justin Watson – Over 16.5 Receiving Yards
The big-bodied receiver who isn’t Travis Kelce, basically.
Justin Watson is the player who runs the deeper routes that Marquez Valdes-Scantling is typically expected to – but when MVS is on the field, the opposition knows it’s a pass play, theoretically accommodating for him here.
Watson comes in for a lot of run plays, therefore freeing up the deeper spaces for play-action. He’s got one or two big plays in him to land this.
