New York Giants @ Minnesota Vikings

Handicap: Giants +3

Sunday evening sees a battle between two of the lesser fancied playoff teams this season as a Vikings team that’s won 11-of-11 one-score games goes head-to-head with a Giants team that started hot against a weak schedule before evening out later in the year.

There’s a good case for skipping the handicap here and going Moneyline on the Giants given the way Wild Card weekend trends shake out historically, but for our Bet Builder we’ll take the insurance of the field-goal here as the Minnesota have consistently turned games into bum-squeakers this year when they haven’t been getting blown out.

Indeed, you’ve probably already seen about how their points-differential this years finished with a minus before it despite their 13-4 winning record because they’ve taken several very heavy defeats against good teams between edging out weaker ones.

Are the Giants good? Not especially, but they are playing above their talent level and coach Brian Daboll will relish their underdog tag going into Minneapolis this week. They gave the Vikes a tough game back at Christmas, a couple of vital plays turning it in the higher seed’s favour.

That experience should count for something in a re-match and the Giants got to rest most of their starters last week as they knew they had their playoff spot locked in. Take the points on with the Giants to keep it close at least.

Saquon Barkley Over 22.5 Receiving Yards

In their previous match-up, running back  Saquon Barkley had his highest number of targets, receptions and yards out of the backfield for the season, those being 10. 8 and 49 respectively.

He’s the Giants’ biggest player by some distance, their offensive plan for this game has to feature him.

He’s also their joint leading receiver in terms of receptions for the year, such is the paucity of pass-catching talent on the roster. It might take six or seven screens to get them, but Barkley should top 22.5 yards receiving.

Baltimore Ravens @ Cincinnati Bengals

Winning Margin: Bengals by 1-13 Points

Two division rivals play a week after they rounded out their regular seasons against one another, meeting for the second time in seven days on Cincinnati’s home turf, and we’d expect a broadly similar outcome.

The Bengals won 27-16 last week and though there will probably be a change at quarterback for the visitors, it shouldn’t make that much of difference in the end because the man coming inot the line-up is not Lamar Jackson.

Even if the former MVP was healthy, you’d be hard pushed to make the case for Baltimore, but with Tyler Huntley suiting up after Anthony Brown deputised last week the bookies are still making the home team almost double-digit favourites on the spread.

They may cover that, but my inclination is to think that back-to-back games benfit the underdog because they get a trial run at their stronger opponent. While Cincy have a loaded offence, they have picked up injuries along the line that would concern me against a Ravens defence that has been keeping games close despite the lack of offensive production.

Of course, Joe Burrow’s snake-hips are more than capable of slithering away from pressure, but that may put a ceiling on their production this week, so a Bengals win, but by fewer than 14 points appeals.

Joe Burrow Over 12.5 Rushing Yards

Put simply, players make plays. This figures to be quite an ugly game if the Ravens can get any kind of foothold as it’s their only chance to win. Burrow had ten yards last week on three attempts and could be under a bit more pressure this week as Baltimore have the experience of facing his offence fresh in their minds.

Burrow’s also shown this season he can put up big numbers on the ground when the gameplan requires it – 46 and 32 against the Chiefs and Titans stand out as they were tight games.

He’s tempting as a touchdown scorer at odds of around 20/1 and 11/2 in First and Anytime markets (five scores on the season so far, but for our Bet Builder we’ll stick closer to even money and take the over on his rushing yardage, as it could take just one play.
