This time last year, Green Bay versus the Rams would have had you licking your lips. You would have sat there wondering if Aaron Rodgers can escape left or right as opposed to stepping up in a pocket because Aaron Donald is on a warpath. If Davante Adams could bypass the magnetic pull of Jalen Ramey’s coverage skills. If Cooper Kupp could evade Jaire Alexander. If Za’Darius Smith could fly past Andrew Whitworth and get to Matt Stafford.

It would have been blockbuster stuff. It never came to pass of course as the Niners beat the Pack in the Divisional round, but it would have been a Game of the Year contender without question.

WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!

Fast forward twelve months and it’s become a sorry sight. Green Bay are 5-8 and haven’t got a chance of reaching .500, while the Rams are currently on course to finish bottom of the NFC West just one year removed from being Super Bowl champs.

The connections that once were – Rodgers to Adams and Stafford to Kupp are now replaced with second-round rookies catching balls from a version of A-Rod that resembles a wandering trucker and Baker Mayfield looking for Van Jefferson. Sorry, this isn’t a billing – it’s me telling you that the only interest we should have here is making money.

Los Angeles (+7)

The only team that Green Bay have beaten by more than a hair all year have been the Chicago Bears. You can typically knock that down to psychological ownership of that franchise, tended to one Aaron Rodgers – and he’ll remind you of that eternally. Away from those mental deeds, the Packers are awful and I’ll not back them to beat any team with a functional coach by a full converted touchdown.

LA don’t have the personnel anymore but they do have schematics to slow down Rodgers by forcing his receivers to create outside of the scheduled. And given the age profile and talent level, I just don’t believe they possess that agency yet.

Aaron Jones Anytime Touchdown Scorer

The Rams’ biggest weakness has been managing to sort a linebacker/safety hybrid that can go toe-to-toe with opposing mismatches at receiver and tight end. Fantasy hopes had Aaron Rodgers being taken earlier than most would have anticipated. He’s been a victim of the dysfunction of course but this is a matchup where he should thrive and might even be the first read now given some of the very complex zonal looks he’s going to be staring down.

Baker Mayfield – Over 193.5 Passing Yards

New Quarter Back lines are my favourite. Because everyone thinks they’ll really struggle with the new system. But that’s not really the case: a new QB in a system gets a smaller playbook.

He is given easy completions and plenty of automatic yards. In theory this results in more completions than yards, but he also benefits from Sean McVay whose easier designs revolve around getting the ball in his hand – and letting receivers build up in yards after the catch.

Van Jefferson – Over 26.5 Receiving Yards

And the likely lad in this instance is Van Jefferson. He’s both the deep shot and the screen go-to in the absence of Cooper Kupp. This is one of my favourite lines of the season.
