Seattle Seahawks @ Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals are slim home favourites against the 5-3 Seahawks on Sunday evening in what could be a crucial match-up in the NFC West.

Both teams have defied preseason expectations but in contrasting ways.

The Cardinals opened 2021 7-0 before quarterback Kyler Murray got hurt. They still scraped into the playoffs but were hoping to build on that performance last year a be a real contender in the open NFC. Struggling for offensive fluency unless Murray improvises, their 3-5 record arguably flatters a team that has teetered, and maybe still is teetering, on the brink of dysfunction.

Their defence has gradually improved this season from being among the league’s worst, and DeAndre Hopkins’ return from suspension is already providing stunning highlights which might unlock their offence, but last week’s loss to Minnesota was littered with errors.

Seattle to Win

Seattle have been a revelation for the opposite reason. They were supposed to fall apart post-Russell Wilson but with Geno Smith at quarterback they’ve become one of the best offences in the league this season. Their defence has also picked up a lot in recent weeks, ranking first in the league over the last three weeks in DVOA.

There’s also very little home-field advantage for Arizona, who hadn’t won in almost a calendar year before they beat New Orleans last time out. Seattle have been playing at a higher level than the Saints and I think they’ll win here.

Kenneth Walker anytime touchdown

Rookie back Kenneth Walker has preserved Seattle’s ground game despite Rashaad Penny getting hurt, picking up five touchdowns in his last four games, including a score last week against the Giants’ tough defence.

He had 97 yards and a score three weeks ago against the Cardinals in Seattle too and coach Pete Carroll loves running the ball almost as much as he enjoys throwing shade at Russell Wilson.

LA Rams @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Speaking of preseason letdowns, the Super Bowl champion LA Rams have come crashing back down to earth this season. They’ve no running game to speak of and the passing game isn’t functioning much better either.

Cooper Kupp sprained an ankle last week but looks set to play. If he were to miss time they’d have to turn to Ben Skowronek and a very underwhelming Allen Robinson to carry their offence.

Matt Stafford hasn’t look right all season either, with eight interceptions, the second most in the league, and 24 sacks to just seven interceptions.

It hasn’t been all that great in Tampa either. Tom Brady undid his retirement – and his marriage –  for a season that would probably be over already if the NFC South wasn’t so weak.

They don’t look like Super Bowl contenders right now anyway, a 21-3 humiliation by the dreadful Panthers a lowlight of the season.

Tampa Bay -3

It’s part of Brady’s first three-game losing streak since 2002 – that was his first full season as New England starter. The best bet here is that he doesn’t allow that to extend to four games.

While the bucs have disappointed, the Rams have been one of the weakest teams in the league this season. They’re still high in many rankings because they’re the champs, but look overvalued to me based on their play. they’ve only beaten Carolina, Atlanta and Arizona this season, and been beaten comfortably by good teams.

Mike Evans Anytime Touchdown

Brady’s losing streak has coincided with his star receiver Mike Evans also cooling off. He hasn’t scored in four games, the first time that’s happened since 2019.

He has never gone five games in the league without a TD in his career. He had 123 yards receiving last week on six receptions against the Ravens, showing that the connection with his QB isn’t irreparably damaged.

He should find the endzone again this week.
