Seahawks @ Chargers: Handicap: LA Chargers -5
Sunday, 9:25pm
The Chargers were one of the preseason favourites given the quality of their defensive recruitments and the offensive weapons available to the phenom that is Justin Herbert at quarterback.
But they’ve laid a few eggs this season, most notably losing 38-10 in their own stadium to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Even when they’ve won, they’ve made heavy work of it. See last Monday night’s comically bad game against the Broncos for the latest example.
However, a lot of these knocks on the LA side are priced into the betting lines by now. The line on this game opened around a touchdown and has shortened to 5 points off that Denver game.
Seattle have also been surprising, but for outperforming their lowly expectations. Chiefly it’s because Geno Smith has been a revelation at starter. He’s ranking among the best quarterbacks in the league this season and has helped them defy a weak defence.
But I’m not sure that continues in this spot against a Chargers team that could welcome back number one receiver Keenan Allen.
Seahawks @ Chargers: Anytime Touchdown Scorer: Austin Ekeler
LA should find joy against the Seahawks defence. Running back Austin Ekeler can look forward to taking on the 25th-ranked rushing defence weighted by opponents.
He’s also a receiving threat out of the backfield with two receiving TDs in addition to four on the ground. All six of his scores have come in his last three games too, so he’s hit a hot streak after a slow start.
He should get in the endzone again on Sunday evening.
Jets @ Broncos: Jets to Win
Sunday, 9:05pm
The Jets added two impact flurry of picks in the draft and are seeing the benefits already.
Ahmad ‘Sauce’ Gardner made Lambeau Field his own last week against the Packers as he celebrated the Jets’ surprisingly comfortable win over the home team in a Cheesehead hat.
The cornerback is favourite for the defensive rookie of the year gong for his play this season .
On the other side of the ball, Breece Hall, their running back selection, is similarly favoured for a season-end award having amassed over 600 scrimmage yards through 6 weeks and 4 touchdowns.
Their performances have allowed the Jets breathing room to bed in second-year QB Zach Wilson and the results have not been terrible so far.
NEW TO PADDY POWER NEWS?
There were asterisks against some of their wins this season up to last week, but beating Green Bay at home demands respect and getting +1 point on the handicap against a Broncos team that looks clueless offensively isn’t enough of it. I’d take the Jets to win outright on the moneyline.
Chiefs @ 49ers: Handicap: Chiefs -2.5
Sunday, 9:26pm
The Chiefs went toe-to-toe with the league-best Bills last week before Josh Allen found Dawson Knox in the endzone with a minute remaining and the Bills D intercepted Patrick Mahomes to avenge (slightly) last season’s AFC playoff loss for Buffalo.
Kansas City have to pick themselves back up after that, but can take encouragement from that loss given they’ve had to restructure their offence without Tyreek Hill this season.
I’d expect them to do just that against a Niners team who dug a huge hole they couldn’t get out of against Atlanta last week.
The Falcons are one of the more limited offences in the league but took advantage of injuries across San Fran’s defence to grind out a comfortable win despite being underdogs.
If the Chiefs get ahead here – which they should – they’ll be even more clinical and -2.5 looks a small margin to cover.
