Alternate Handicap: Carolina +10.5

No guts, no glory.

The Panthers just fired their coach this week. By now most NFL watchers will be familiar with the stat that they were 1-26 under Matt Rhule’s tutelage when their opponents scored 17 points or more.

Their starting QB, Baker Mayfield, is out. His back-up, Sam Darnold, is also out. That means third-stringer PJ Walker steps in to start as they travel across the country to take on the current Super Bowl champs.

But the Rams have just not been that good this season. They’ve scored one touchdown in their last nine quarters of play. Their running game is non-existent, and that hobbles any attempt to set-up their play-action game. Their O-line has been problem too.

Carolina, even if they get a bit of a bounce from shedding off the old regime under interim coach Steve Wilks, won’t be able to take advantage of LA’s struggles to beat them, but I’d take them with a +10.5 start to cover.

Buffalo Bills @ Kansas City Chiefs, Sunday 9:26pm

TV: Sky Sports NFL

Handicap: BUFFALO BILLS -2.5

These two teams played out one of the all-time great post-season games last January in the Divisional Round of the AFC playoffs, marching over each other’s defence until it came to coin-toss time and Chiefs saw fortune favour them in overtime.

If the Bills had won that game I’m not sure they’d have let Joe Burrow wriggle his way to Super Bowl, but that’s all hypothetical now.

It matters in this game because Week 6 of 2022 calendar is their first crack at their conquerors since that epic battle.

This feels like an opportunity for a Bills team who have only gotten better since that defeat to exorcise some of those demons and I can see them grabbing it with both hands.

Travis Kelce Receiving Yards 77.5: Under

Arguably, the challenge of shutting down the Chiefs’ offence has become slightly easier since that loss too, given Tyreek Hill is now a Miami Dolphin.

That’s seen tight-end Travis Kelce’s role assume even greater significance for them. On Monday night last week he snared four touchdowns in a 30-29 bum-squeaker of a win against the Raiders.

He caught them all on just 25 yards receiving too. I’d expect a similarly low figure for him this week as the Bills rank as the best team in the league defending tight-ends. They held Baltimore’s Mark Andrews to just two catches in Week 4 and should repeat the trick here.

Arizona Cardinals @ Seattle Seahawks, Sunday 9:06pm

TV: NFL Redzone on Sky Sports Mix

1st Quarter Winner Three-Way: Seattle

There’s a really good case for taking the Seahawks with the points against a Cardinals team that has looked so far below expectations during the opening weeks of the season.

They’re reliant on Kyler Murray’s improvisational skills to pull scores out of nowhere when they’re in trouble. While he can do that, it’s not a gameplan.

But the even more significant corollary of this for our bet builder, as borne out by their failure to score in any first quarter so far this season, is that their scripted plays for the opening drives of their games are falling completely flat.

What we’re essentially doing here is betting the Seahawks can score a point in the opening 15 minutes of play. Their offence has stunned the league under Geno Smith’s control. It is ranking in some advanced metrics as among the very best in the league through five weeks.

Seattle to win the first quarter is a no-brainer this week.
