There are certain rivalries that eclipse the context in which they’re played.

In the NFL, those are few and far between – largely due to the fact that American rivalry cross-state is a bit tedious outside of a chosen few.

Primarily, they’re success-driven.

But the Rams and the Niners is one of the best recent rivalries in any of the big four sports in the US.

It stems down to divisional hostility in that they’re both excellent but thriving on-field isn’t enough. Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay do not like each other – that much is clear.

WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!

With the Rams winning the Super Bowl and these two always near the top of anyone’s shortlist for the NFC, the drama that seems to follow these two whenever they play isn’t lost on the NFL landscape.

The Niners are already trying to overcome early setbacks, with them losing franchise QB Trey Lance to a season-ending injury, but Jimmy G is back under centre now and he’s got a rich history of toppling the Rams when it seemed unlikely.

In fact, the only time this decade that the Rams have beaten the Niners was in the playoffs last year. Does that hand them the advantage here? A Bet Builder will explain as much.

The Rams to Win

The issue here isn’t Jimmy G. It’s not even necessarily the fact that you can’t run outside zone against this Rams team once Donald anchors in the defensive tackle spot.

It’s that McVay has finally gotten in Shanahan’s head. These are pure chess games, played out between two genius playcallers, and while everyone considered McVay to be the next messiah, he couldn’t get past Shanahan.

Until he finally did.

That Niners team was even better than the current crop, and they’ll need to be too creative to try and manufacture yards for the likes of Deebo.

I anticipate Stafford to make better reads against two complex defensive schemes and that’s what it boils down to.

Cooper Kupp – Under 93.5 Receiving Yards

Kupp is taking more and more screens to get yardage because Allen Robinson no longer demands the same attention as Robert Woods did.

He’s getting all of their attention, and while that continues, they’re having to throw him the ball behind the line of scrimmage.

Not every team has the linebacking speed that the Niners possess, and I think the screens should be really problematic for them to execute.

For that reason, I can’t see Kupp hitting his usual hypes.

George Kittle – Over 42.5 Receiving Yards

The Rams’ weakness in the passing game defensively is when the opposition dictate groupings and force linebackers to cover opposing tight ends.

Shanahan knows all about this and he’ll force an undersized linebacker or safety to take on George Kittle. He’s healthy, only Travis Kelce is a better pass-catching tight end than Kittle, and if the Niners’ conservative medical staff are saying he’s ready to go, I think Jimmy G will lean on him again.

Deebo Samuel – Over 29.5 Rushing Yards

Shanahan knows wide zone out of standard running formations won’t work, but designs plays for Samuel with ball in hand are different and trickier to communicate defensive alignments for.

If they’re going to put up 17 or more points, they’ll need to run the ball a lot. And if they’re going to be successful in doing so, it’ll have to be exotic.

Exotic looks? Deebo.
