Tuesday 1.15am: Broncos @ Seahawks
TV: Sky Sports Sky Sports NFL

Franchise quarterbacks are the most-sought-after players in any sport. There isn’t a single other position that dictates as much as a signal-caller in American football, and some teams can spend decades trying to draft one.

Generally speaking, they never get traded because of their significance, so when Russell Wilson was announced as traded to the Denver Broncos, it sent shockwaves around the league with every pundit chiming in on how it would all pan out.

Then of course, to really spice things up, the magic schedule generator through us out a golden primetime fixture for week one – Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos going back to Seattle to face Russ’ former team on their turf. Not that the first Monday Night Football of an NFL season needs any additional billing, but my God – what a treasure that is.

The contract Wilson got is seismic, and the guaranteed money in it reset an entire market. Not that I’m bitter or anything, but I kind of feel like we’re due a bit of luck in that regard well, Russ. And none of us probably as weird as he is, either.

So, without further ado, let’s capitalise on a narrative.

NEW TO PADDY POWER NEWS?

Seattle Seahawks (+6.5 points)

Yes, please.

A quarterback moving outside of his comfort zone for the first time in his career, on the road, with new players, against a unit with no expectations on them and a chip on their shoulder.

This is made for the dogs to cover.

Russell Wilson for all that he was once a top-ten quarterback in the league is certainly not that anymore, and it always fascinated me how he still throws interceptions to a simple cloud coverage in the flats and has still yet to figure out cover 2.

He’ll make enough mistakes that Seattle will be close – this is my favourite handicap of the week.

(6.5)

Melvin Gordon to Score Anytime

People are so high on Javonte Williams but he’s only going to get an equal share of rushing duties. Consider that Gordon is probably the best short-yard runner and better receiver, there’s always going to be value in taking Gordon in both prop bets and touchdown scorer slates.

I’d expect him to get the goal line work.

Rashaad Penny – Under 65.5 Yards Rushing

I know everyone expects Seattle to run the ball but you need to remember a couple of things. First of all, Denver are also thinking that.

Secondly, they might be forced to throw the ball because of the game script. If Denver do go out to two-score lead, that puts Penny’s rushing ability into the back of everyone’s minds – and the only time he’d be called upon there would be to convert short yardage situations.

Combine his knack for getting injured and the very real possibility of Travis Homer getting all the touches in hurry-up, and his floor is quite low.

Courtland Sutton – Over 64.5 Receiving Yards

Not only is Sutton Denver’s X receiver and therefore will get all of the quick game, he’s also the one that Wilson will look to in those stereotypical panic moments where he escapes the pocket, runs around for about 30 seconds and flings the ball 40 yards downfield.

Take the over.
