The NFL is back, and after what seemed to be the longest offseason of all time, week one has thrown up many intriguing matchups for NFL fans to look forward to. Of course, while we are living through thee coronavirus pandemic, things will be very different for punters this season. Training camps were curtailed and there have been plenty of surprise cuts and additions. Most games will be played behind closed doors which adds a new dynamic for punters to ponder.
But the 101st NFL season and the race to Tampa Bay for Super Bowl LV has begun and our US trader, Ian Dent, has joined me to pick out the value bets in three of the best games on the opening weekend.
“A tough NFC North matchup in week one between two old foes, it will be close, but I do like the Packers getting the points here. I think Aaron Rodgers will be highly motivated, he’s been written off a bit after the Packers drafted his heir apparent Jordan Love in the first round of the draft. I think the Packers will come out hard and be able to move the football, and the Vikings have lost a few players on defence, so I like the Packers +2.5 and I wouldn’t put anyone off them on the money line either”.
“In the first/anytime TD scorer market I like the rookie AJ Dillon, Green Bay will be running the football a lot and Dillon profiles well as a goal-line back and they may want to get him involved here”.
“This is definitely the game of the week. This is the one to watch, two hall of fame QBs clashing, Tom Brady making his debut for the Bucs and it is going to be strange seeing him in that uniform after all those years in New England. But I like the Saints here, they’ve been one of the most consistent teams in the league over the last few years with very little turnover on their roster. They are very strong at home and I would fancy them -3.5 points.”
“In the TD markets, and with no preseason, we haven’t seen much of Rob Gronkowski, but we know he has that connection with Brady from previous years playing together and he has always been a big threat in the red zone”
Pittsburgh Steelers @ NY Giants
Monday Night, 12.10am
There’s a double header of Monday night football in week one, the first game sees the Pittsburgh Steelers and Ben Roethlisberger head to New York to take on the Giants and young gun QB Daniel Jones.
“I really like the Steelers this season and I think they can get off to a good start here, Big Ben has looked good in camp after his surgery, he looks healthy and slimmer. The Steelers have been very popular with punters and even though they are -5.5 now in the handicap market, I still like them at that and I think they can cover.”
“I like the Steelers new TE Eric Ebron in the TD markets here, he is a big threat in the red zone and has 27 career touchdowns. He looks a great bet in the first and anytime TD markets”
