04:15 Tai Tuivasa v Jairzinho Rozenstruik – Jairzinho Rozenstruik by KO/TKO
Betting on Heavyweight fights can be like a coin flip. One punch can turn the tides. That’s especially true for Tai Tuivasa fights where the tide can shift multiple times in a round. I’m picking Jairzinho here for a few reasons. Firstly, his opponent simply isn’t very good. Tuivasa is coming off of 4 losses in a row. He absorbs a very unhealthy five significant strikes per minute compared to Rozenstruik’s 2.8. Rozenstruik actually is a decorated kickboxer with 76 wins and 64 KO’s. Tai Tuivasa is fond of a shoey after his fights. Unfortunately, this time I think it’ll be Rozenstruik delivering a shoey straight to his dome piece. Talking about a headkick to be clear.
04:45 Mateusz Gamrot v Dan Hooker – Mateusz Gamrot to Win by Points
Dan Hooker is a bit of a fan favourite. He’s been in a few wars over the years and gave us some great fights. I don’t predict this to be one of them unfortunately. That’s because The Hangman is a striker and Gamrot averages over five successful takedowns per 15 minutes. Hooker actually has deceptively good takedown defence, a little like his teammate Izzy. But I do think Gamrot will get his takedowns throughout this fight until the final bell and ultimately win by decision.
05:15 Dricus Du Plessis v Israel Adesanya – Dricus Du Plessis to Win
The odds are split evenly. This is a pick’em and I’ve got my pick – its Du Plessis.
Du Plessis has had a meteoric rise in the last two years. Coming from the relative unknown he’s now considered one of the best fighters in the UFC. The South African submitted Till, knocked out Brunson, knocked out Whitaker and then won the Middleweight belt from Sean Strickland in January. Strickland won the belt from Adesanya so MMA math would suggest Du Plessis should beat Adesanya.
Adesanya was the champion for so long. It was hard to imagine Izzy losing to anyone. Now with three losses in his last seven fights, followed by a break from the sport after this last defeat, he’s looking a lot more human.
On paper, Dricus is a nightmare for Adesanya. He’s got knockout power by winning nine fights by KO. He can get takedowns and he landed six on Strickland in his last fight. He also has submissions with 10 submission victories. We just saw earlier this year he can stand and compete with an elite striker too. Dricus has plenty of ways to successfully defend his title so I won’t choose a method of victory.
