Revealed: Punters say Conor McGregor’s comeback won’t last long

The Notorious returns to the octagon this weekend at some ungodly hour and Paddy Power's punters are saying it may not be worth the wait

Our punters expect Conor McGregor to win this weekend’s bout in 60 seconds or less, according to the bets we’ve taken in the build-up to the fight. One of our most popular selections on markets so far shows that backers expect the MMA fighter to end things in Round one (17/10).

However, although McGregor is odds-on favourite to win 1/3, the majority of bets (75%) struck on the bout have been on the underdog, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone at odds of 9/4.

McGregor Method of victory: KO/TKO 1/2 | On Points 9/1 | Submission 35/1

Interestingly, although Cerrone has attracted the bulk of bets, the majority of the money is on McGregor.

• 75% bets on Cerrone to win
• But the bulk of money on McGregor
• Punters expect it all to end in Round one
• 45% of Irish punters betting AGAINST McGregor

“This is by far and away the lowest key build-up we’ve ever seen to a McGregor fight of any kind, and if the betting’s anything to go by, his comeback could be the biggest anticlimax since he switched codes and the twins entered the Love Island villa,” spokesman Paddy Power said.

Looking at purely Irish based punters, support is not as significant as bookies have seen in the past, with 45% of punters backing AGAINST the ‘Notorious’ fighter to succeed in winning his comeback.

Should McGregor prevail, it’s expected he’ll call out a familiar foe to be his next opponent with Khabib Nurmagomedov (4/6), winner of the irrepressible Irishman’s last appearance in the octagon, reckoned to be his most likely target, while Jose Also (66/1), who Mcgregor knocked out in 13 seconds in 2017, is the list likely among those listed.
