It’s Derby Day at Epsom as the leading three-year-olds attempt to add their name to the illustrious roll call of Classic winners.
A field of 17 runners are set to contest the Epsom Derby (4.30pm), the most prestigious race on the calendar in the UK. It may be her Platinum Jubilee weekend but Queen Elizabeth II doesn’t have a runner as her antepost fancy, Reach For The Moon, misses out for fitness reasons.
Veteran trainer Sir Michael Stoute is chasing a sixth win in the race and saddles the favourite, Desert Crown, who bids to become the first horse to do the Dante-Derby double since 2015.
Aiden O’Brien, the most successful trainer in the history of the Epsom Derby, fires three darts at this year’s renewal, while Charlie Appleby also boasts a trio of runners in an attempt to follow up stable star Adayar’s success in this 12 months ago.
The Derby is not the only attraction on Saturday at Epsom as there’s also Group 3 action with the Princess Elizabeth Stakes (2.35pm) and Diomed Stakes (3.10pm). The Dash Handicap (3.45pm) should also provide plenty of drama over 5f of fast and furious racing.
