Paul Townend has stuck with Lossiemouth, but I think this was a really tough choice for him. Blood Destiny was very impressive at Fairyhouse and the more rain that falls the better. Lossiemouth is a very good filly and gets the 7lb mares allowance. That definitely helps her cause but Blood Destiny can deny his stablemate.
The ultra-competitive Country Hurdle and Irish raider Filey Bay was unlucky to finish second in the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury last month. He is a little higher in the handicap now which is not ideal, but he could still be improving.
Another Emmet Mullins runner who now runs in the colours of J P McManus. Not many of this field would be able to win a race over two miles but he has and has the stamina to win over three miles also. I think Corbetts Cross is a cut above and he’s my NAP of the day.
Last year’s Gold Cup winner A Plus Tard could be the forgotten horse in the Blue Riband. It’s hard to erase the memory of him bolting up the hill 12 months ago. He was a sick horse when pulled up in the Betfair Chase at Haydock and after seeing Honeysuckle’s performance on Tuesday, I’m willing to trust Henry De Bromhead will have him ready to go.
Galopin Des Champs is a very good horse, but there are a lot of ‘ifs’ before you win a Gold Cup. This could be a little ‘stop-start’ contest and the stress of it all may not suit him. He may be the best horse in the race, but that doesn’t always mean he’ll win it.
Henry de Bromhead’s runner Chris’s Dream has won a couple of points-to-points and that will set him up nicely for this Hunters’ Chase. Jockey Maxine O’Sullivan has ridden the winner of this race before and is a very capable pilot. He has some very good form to his name in graded company and is a bit of value.
Market leader Allegoire de Vassy jumps very badly right which will not suit. She has also never run in Ireland or the UK on a left-handed track. This is a worry for me. Impervious is the one I like as she is a rock-solid jumper and has put up some good performances this season. She’ll handle the ground too.
Gordon Elliott would love to win this race named in honour of the great Martin Pipe as the Irish trainer spent his early days in the UK. Cool Survivor is unexposed and has to be a huge player with brilliant young pilot, Sam Ewing, on board.
